I stopped by the BMW dealer this morning ...

I just read the GLK may be offering a 2.2L diesel. That is my first choice if I were to get a small size SUV today.

Would not own a BMW with a turbo out of warranty. My 335 has had problems with HPFP, injectors, VANOS. I think they still have failures on the newer engine too. Leasing new is the way to go, I don't know about the X3, but great deals on M3 leases. Take advantage of the free maintenance.

Terms like "daily driver" and "not wanting to vacuum dog hairs again" could also lend clues as to the dealer's offer. I'm certainly not casting stones, but a well-used 133k 993 with a banged up front end, is only going to command so much money. I'd say if the BMW is wanted bad enough, and with the convenience of getting the deal done, $16.5 may not be bad.
This is a wholesale car they are gonna ship to an auction...they know they aren't gonna see big money for the car

It is not a given that this is a $20K+ car based on two sentences of description and that one picture. The fact is I bet not a lot of folks here would jump on this at $20K or more.

Time is money, lot of tire kickers, lot of time wasters, lot of bad people out there too. Given this is a higher mileage C2 with some front end damage, sales tax savings, convenience, no headaches, no scams, no BS, this seems like a reasonable deal. Could he get concessions on the X3 and more money for his C2 probably.
But please lets stop telling him the X3 stinks, a line of buyers are waiting with 20K+ to buy his car, and he is being reamed by the dealer.

Yeah. All I said was that I'm looking for one in the ~$20K range. This car could be full money at the dealer trade in price. Wouldn't know until I saw it in person.

I said ALL the bmws stink, and I don't care how many suckers are lining up with how much cash. I'd never own another bmw if they were giving them away.

If you want to get past anecdotal, good friends Ramon LeFrancois and Nicole Colicchio (Tony's wife of TC Design, who builds practically every roll cage of note in our area) run Bavarian Motorsport in Milpitas. Nothing catastrophic of note is relayed to me when I query "what's what." Further, our local mailing list (PDC) is easily 200 BMW strong of ~300 participants. No ongoing discussions of BMW woes. Sadly, we can't say similar about M96 (and beyond) equipped Porsches, can we?

My E46 has been relatively trouble free although I am on my third aux radiator fan. I am good at throwing money at it for preventative maintenance.
E90 issues feedback linky below. They are all like other cars.

Man, what an onslaught of various negative opinions. Cheer up, dudes.
From the description and photo, $16.5k might not be that bad for trade-in. It just depends on how much you value your time and how much you would dislike to go through selling your car to an individual (and deal with the tire kickers). For those acting like the dealer is raping him, as QC stated, they are running a business--what do you expect?
The whole situation is a compromise ; I think what truly matters is how YOU feel about it, not how the rest of the board feels about it.

I like the X-3 because: its curb weight is about 4300 lbs, 300 hp, auto 8 spd. No discounts, though. (See

On on the flip side, people paying excessive amounts for used hybrids only to find out all their savings flushed away once they have to replace the battery that generally costs $2500-$3000.

If you can live without a BMW and the electronic goodies, and are going to check out the below, look into the Subaru Forester turbo. They are reliable and easily modified as they share many parts with the WRX and STi. They can be turned into pretty sporty machines and you can still have your high seats and cargo room.
I think if I was in the market for a compact SUV (like the X-3) and didn't need a "cachet" brand name, I'd be looking at the Honda CRV, the Toyota RAV, The Subaru something or another, or even the Chevy something and Ford Escape. And in the case of the OP, I'd be looking to sell that car privately, or work something out with race911. Hergeheimer has a great rep, BTW.
