I stopped by the BMW dealer this morning ...

If you went to the one in the Santa Ana Auto mall, and it was a lady you delt with. She also tried to buy my 993. I have somewhat of an opinion of them, but the bottom line is i would go to another Dealer, just my 2 cents.

Get the 328I - solid engine.
335 has had a ton of problems with fuel pump and turbo issues - google it.
I was going to buy a 335 this past fall, but bought the 328 instead.
328 with manual tranmission (hard to find) is a very quick car
I keep my cars a long time and put on alot of miles.
The turbo chargers crap out at about 90K - 10K to fix.
The 335 high performance fuel pump has been a nightmare - multiple failures with people's cars sitting arounf for weeks (shortage of pumps). Alot of lemon law issues.

dude, its a business not unicef. Of course they are going to give him a low ball trade offer...thats how they make their money.
If he's not happy with it, he can go elsewhere or sell it himself, but there is no sense beating up a dealer for attempting to make a profit.

It's pretty naive to think you can get top dollar for your trade-in car at ANY dealership. Like Quad said, it's a business. If they give any more than $16k for that car they'd likely be losing money on it. They'd most likely send it off to auction and get about $16k for it there. Way too many expenses involved to even consider selling it at their own dealership.
Facts of life people.
GL with your bmw shopping.
Personally I wouldn't consider ANY new bmw. They're all time bombs just waiting to f@ck up your day in a big way in the near future. They're nice when they work. They just don't work for very long. Just look at used bmw prices. They're not worth a plug nickel. (yeah, we've owned a few bmws)
rant over

Dear OP,
Here are my recommandations for you to get best deals..
1. For new X3, go to cars.com and select 3 dealers of your choice(you can add the ONE in santa ana...)
wait for them to start giving you quotes and if one seems lower ask the other two to beat it. You might be surprise what you might end up...
2. Put the car for sale at any of online classified(except ebay-usually not get best $$$) then let the bidding start.
3. Fixing the front lower section is not that hard and please take it to the detail shop to get that car shine and clean before you show to anyone...
GL!
OR
One of our senior rennlister who was offering you $20K is not bad for both parties.. IMO.

He's just looking for offers greater than the supposed dealer quote. Let the bidding commence (already had one member fall for it).

Terms like "daily driver" and "not wanting to vacuum dog hairs again" could also lend clues as to the dealer's offer. I'm certainly not casting stones, but a well-used 133k 993 with a banged up front end, is only going to command so much money. I'd say if the BMW is wanted bad enough, and with the convenience of getting the deal done, $16.5 may not be bad.

My last go-around for a new car I ended up using the "Internet" sales route that f8vr993 mentioned, pitting the dealers against each other. The profit off the sale came mostly from hold-back and incentives (I paid $300 over "dealer invoice.") No financing games either,,, got the number over the phone, dealer transferred car, came in and handed them a check, signed,, drove off.
I didn't even let them "detail" the car before I picked it up.
And the "old" car was sold on Craigslist...

I drove one last week (dealer is a friend and I'll drive new stuff often out of curiosity.) I was not impressed with the 2011 X3.

I think if I was in the market for a compact SUV (like the X-3) and didn't need a "cachet" brand name, I'd be looking at the Honda CRV, the Toyota RAV, The Subaru something or another, or even the Chevy something and Ford Escape. And in the case of the OP, I'd be looking to sell that car privately, or work something out with race911. Hergeheimer has a great rep, BTW.

We have a brand new X3xdrive35i, new for 2011. It's head and shoulders above the old X3 and I recommend it highly. As for the turbo engines, they did have problems with the twin turbo 335s, which is why they've now gone to twin scroll single turbos. I believe they've been in use for a few years now and I haven't heard as much negative press as I did about the twins.
That said, I'm not necessarily a turbo guy. My wife loves it -it's pretty zoomy - and my 4 yr old gets a big kick out of the acceleration. I might drive the xdrive 28i before I decide upon the 35i. But overall it's a very, very, nice car. Ours is Vermilion red with mojave leather (chocolate brown) and light sienna wood. a gorgeous car that I'd recommend without hesitation.
BTW, we paid an even thousand above invoice for the car.

Dealer is offering $16.5k, people think its worth $20k---sell it to the first person who comes up with
$20k by Wednesday.
Sometimes a couple of grand isnt worth the headache so with your gut and dont look back.
