The electronic method that flying_low mentions above is appealing, and could be applied to these two sensors. I'm a EE, so this is in line with my skills. A friend teases me, "When electronics is your hammer, many issues in control systems become your nails." ...or something like that.
Yeah, two ways to skin this "cat".

I'm going to look at it closer next time I see the car. It is very simple and inexpensive.
Please verify this but I understand the first set of O2 sensors looking for a voltage drop (lean condition) on the
SAI cycle.

Calvin - I gather the car on which you saw this method was not your car. If you learn more please pmail me. In particular, I'm curious how the connections to the O2 sensors were made. It's possible to splice into the wires, but plug-to-plug would be much more sanitary and professional.
