Default Replaced the starter this weekend. Holy Cow!

It took 4-5 hours and that included messing around for an hour trying to figure out how to get to the top bolt and also changing the oil. I used the instructions on p-car.com which are great, but my hands are obviously bigger than the guy who wrote the instructions. Finally I loosened the engine bolts and lowered it 1-2" so I could reach over the top of the starter. Got the starter off in a few minutes after that. Other than that, I pretty much followed the p-car instructions. I did this yesterday afternoon and I am sore this morning. if I were rich, I would gladly pay for this to be done.

How many miles did you get out of the starter?

80K miles. Every once in a while it would spin and not engage. I would turn the key again and it would start fine, but I was living on borrowed time.

Mine was still working fine at 45,000 miles, but I had a fingernails-on-chalkboard screeching noise on start-up that I couldn't eliminate. It was the starter. I had my favorite local shop do it. Starting with a hot car, they did it in under two hours. I think the tech has asbestos arms.

Mine started doing this too...

I see this job in my near future. I searched here and found out all about that top bolt being hard to get to. Not looking forward to it...

Where did you get the starter from?

I got it from Vertex. It was the least expensive of the Porsche parts places that I had used in the past.

Got one step of hell worse for ya. Evidently at one time when the motor was out of the car, some brilliant mechanic thought to just put a regular screw in the top spot so you would have to drop the motor to get too it with a tool that would work... $$$ later I had a new starter and a pissed mechanic.

Oh the joys you find on a used race car.

Eewwww ...sorry to hear it was such a PITA!

I'm at 131k miles on the original starter. No symptoms yet, and I hope to keep it that way (knocking on desktop!!)
