Csmab, great color choice. I love my midnight blue and even those swirls. Congrats!
Can I ask what happened between buying, doing PPI, and top end rebuild? How did it all happen that way? Sorry, Im just a curious kinda guy, especially now that you have a happy ending. We always say PPI..PPI..PPI, but its not bulletproof obviously.

Beautiful car, and congrats. Turbo spoiler totally works on a C4S (obviously!)
Great attitude considering your post-PPI surprise. The silver lining is that your car is better than when you started, so it's not like you paid something for nothing.
I expect that many good shops can potentially fail to uncover a bad top end conclusively. But how many of us would realistically pay another $300(?) beyond an initial $350 or so to get behind the valve covers? Realistically, by the time most of us get to the PPI phase, we are so pumped up and excited, we're planning on a "passing grade" and perhaps nudging the shop to provide one. 65K miles is pretty much in the "typical" top end range of 65K-85K. Taking the miles into account, any shop should consider including "top end re-build possible" on PPI reports for all cars in this mileage range.

I'm glad it turned out for the positive. It's a great car!
I was asking because I'm looking at a 993TT in Texas and once again I will be asking myself is it worth the extra $$$ for compression/leak down. I know is about 99.9% yes on a PPI, and then varies on spending the extra. A lot of times you base that on the feedback of the mechanic doing the PPI and in your case I would have done the same as you.
Congrats again and thanks for sharing!

Well....Basically the shop performing the PPI missed some items. Since the SAI ports were clear they claimed the valve guides weren't bad enough to address at the current time. There were no CEL's going on. The mechanic had extensive knowledge of the car and owner and I probably let that sway my buying decision since he claimed it was a good car. In hindsight perhaps I should have asked him to remove the valve covers and dig deeper into the engine and spend more $$$ on the PPI. I didn't because the owner was a really good guy that had no idea of any impending issues. The shop also had a good rep in the area. I did the basic PPI and the shop claimed it was a great car. Just goes to show you can still get stung even if you do your homework. I purchased the car out of state. The issues started once I drove the car 1000 miles home to TX. Oh well...I have turned it into a great car with the maintenance I have performed. My wife said this is my last Porsche and I will be buried in it given the fact I blew through the anticipated budget by a good margin. I plan on getting my ROI by driving this car and not letting it be a garage queen.
