Default New 997 variant

While awaiting your exotic hybrid's build, drive around the next best thing: conventional-engined Turbo S in matching motifs!

9Magazine.com's "Porsche’s Plug-In Hybrid 918 Spyder Goes from Dream to Reality:"

Also limited to no more than 918 units, the 911 Turbo S Edition 918 Spyder will have exterior and interior design elements echoing the plug-in hybrid 918 Spyder supercar’s styling. It features similar exterior colors, carbon-fiber elements inside and out, enhanced leather equipment and numerous acid-green accents on items such as the brake calipers, illuminated sill plates, interior stitching and instrument cluster needles. A limited-edition badge on the glove compartment door will feature the same production number as the customer’s 918 Spyder.

Worldwide 918 Spyder customers can begin ordering this special edition 911 Turbo S sports car today, and customer deliveries will start later in 2011. The U.S. base manufacturer’s suggested retail prices for the Coupe and Cabriolet versions are the same as the standard 911 Turbo S models, $160,700 and $172,100 respectively, excluding destination.

Sorry Herr Porsche, but I'm choosing to take very early retirement instead.

Time is worth more than anything and it can't be bought.

Porsche's now taking production orders.
What happened to the $645K price that was mentioned last year in Monterey?

"In economics and consumer theory, a Giffen good is one which people paradoxically consume more of as the price rises, violating the law of demand. "

Terry, thanks for the link. I think the 918 is better described as a Veblen good.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Veblen_good
In economics, Veblen goods are a group of commodities for which people's preference for buying them increases as a direct function of their price, as greater price confers greater status, instead of decreasing according to the law of demand.
Luxury cars, particularly at the higher end, like the Rolls Royce Phantom pictured here, are often said to be desirable due to their price. As a result it is argued that luxury cars are Veblen goods.

Per RLer ExcMag, on Excellence-Mag.com's "Production 918 Spyder Hybrid Goes on Sale Today:"

Those who order a 918 will also be allowed to order a 911 Turbo Edition 918 Spyder, to let the world know those customers have a fuel-sipping 918 on the way.
Mechanically, the car is the 530-hp 911 Turbo S. First deliveries are June 2011, with the coupe at $160,700 and the Cabriolet $172,100.

Besides this footage shot trailing the 918, looks like a videographer in front, too:

Is that the best job in the world or what? Not sure if I'd trust those Italian drivers in the Fiat Panda's and Cinquecento's though.
