Default Goldenrod install question/problem

When I disconnected the ball socket at the base of the shift lever the plastic cup ? in the rod crumbled. I'm assuming that I can get this (I can't find the part number only listed is the rod) piece and install it into the metal rod. Has anybody had this happen to them and does anybody know the part number so I can call the local dealer tomorrow? Tips on installing the new piece?

An interesting side note to the install was finding what appeared to be an old rats nest in the tunnel.

It is a ball cup. It is listed separately only as a 928 part, Clutch Lever Ball Cup Bushing, part #928-116-145-03, $13 or so. Just clean out the pieces of the old cup, and press the new one with a vice until it is full seated. I replaced the cups in both ends of this guide tube--they are identical.

You may want to put a loop of safety wire around the front end, so it can't fall off if the ball cup fails.

The 993 part listings show only the entire "guide tube", part #96442401101, $135.

The front end of this guide tube, called an "angular joint", is about $90.

I have a (brand new) spare cup if you need one.

But I'd strongly advise replacing the cups on both ends.

Fyi, make sure your new rod is exactly the same length as the old one. Shifter won't sit in the right place if it's longer/shorter.

I'm assuming the cup on most 15 year old cars is probably worn/past it. Seems like good preventive maintenance/while you're in there to replace those parts. I'm going to do the Golden Rod soon myself at my next service.

This is why our SSK eliminates those cups and replaces them with stainless steel rod ends. They will not deteriorate like the plastic does.
