Thought I had prepared for everything, various plug removers( magnetic and rubber) misc extensions, flexi ratchets the whole thing. I had access ton a place to work on the car for one day, so got an early start, jacked car up, put on stands. Everything goes well with muffler removal, I am ahead of schedule but then the engine tin ( shroud, bit you need to remove with the hose attached). What are those 6 mil hex bolts made of ? I used a fresh Allen key ratchet and the bolt just stripped like it was made of plastic, I tried the other one and it was going to do the same thing, I was stumped, messed around with it for a while but they are not coming out
Well the day was getting on so I had to put the car back together and change what plugs I could reach for the time being.
Here is my question, is there any way to get to the Last plug ( passenger side, front out?) from the top? Or without having to remove shroud? What do the race guys do? Is there any magic tool ( i am visualizing a ratchet snake) or do I have to tackle it from the bottom again but with bigger and better tools.

It's really easy with the engine out....

If you look inside the passenger rear wheelwell with car on stands there should be a trap door which
can be removed (section of engine tin at corner) this will allow access under steering pump...

If Ron Popeil drove a 993 there would be a magic Ratchet snake tool.

Drop the muffler and the engine shroud. Access is decidedly easier if you do that. Of course dropping the engine takes the same amount of time but is more complex. Putting it back together is another story.

Really! But is that not the thing I was trying to remove? How is this trap door held on?

Did it about 2 months ago and ran into the same issue.
I used a 12 point socket on those stupid allen bolts that strip so easily.

It was still pretty hard to remove the 12th plug. Somebody needs to invent a collapsible extension.

I decided to delete the clutch ventilation pipe, so I bought a new engine tin from a Tiptronic and replaced those allen bolts with new ones. Next time should be much easier, the metal for the bolt is different too and hopefully stronger.

Seriously just hammer a 12 point socket on those bolt and you should get them out.

Oh and be smarter than me.

I went through all that to find out that 2 of my spark plug wires were cracked.
So last week I had to change the spark plug wires which is also a major PITA.
Would have saved time to do both at the same time. I thought I could wait for the 90k service and save $450 but no such luck.

Yeah my plug wires that side where looking a bit sad too, figure I will have to tackle it again in a month or so and do wires too. I have to say my diy urge is fading fast.

The small allens or nuts your speaking of retain the engine tin I'm certain,I replaced all my plugs not
three months ago and removed no mufflers but then it's a Twin Turbo.
The tin on the corner is also on NA993's so that you may get under the power steering pump without
being double jointed.

Im also changing my plug wires and everything is going well exept for that last one. I cant even remove the wire from the plug...

Im curious what the "trap door" is?
Did you guys have to remove shroud in order to just change the plug wire for the last difficult plug?

Remove the engine tin/shroud. That's the best thing to do. Steps on P-car are pretty much spot on.
I just removed the right side shroud for the last plug. Left would have been easier if shroud was removed, but it was possible without removing.

The trap door is only on the turbos to my knowledge.
