Default Question about engine and gearbox removal on a 993 Carrera 4

Hi all,

I usually am active in the Transaxle scene but this time I have my hands on a 911 for some maintenance work (clutch replacement and other items) and have now ran across a few questions.

I am currently in the process of removing the engine together with the gearbox out of a friends 993 Carrera 4.

So far, what I have done is:

- Put the car on a 2-poster-lift
- Cut Battery
- Remove DME relais
- Remove all engine and drivetrain related covers, back to front.
- Drain all oil
- Disconnnect hard and soft oil line
- Remove clutch Master Cylinder
- Remove starter wiring
- Disconnect driveshafts and rest them down
- Remove crossbrace and heater hoses and ducting attached to it
- Remove crossbrace from rear axle
- Remove shift coupler
- Removed A/C compressor and shifted outside left sidewards
- Unplugged several connectors in engine bay
- Disconnect and secure fuel lines
- Disconnect and secure power steering hoses
- Remove exhaust end pipes and exhausts (side units)
- Remove rubber protection from the coupler unit at the driveshaft which goes to the front wheel and loosened the two hex bolts.
- and some other items which I might have forgotten to list down.

Basically (after doublechecking everything once again) I am now in a position in which if I unbolt the 2 hydro engine mounts on the back and the asymmetric
transverse carrier on the front of the gearbox, the engine and gearbox would come down.

I have two questions at this point which I would appreciate some advise on:

1) if I put 4 pallets stacked on a pallet roller (resulting in about 60cm height) and then rest it under the engine and gearbox so both of them are perfectly supported,
will I then be able (after loosening the above mentioned bolts plus the 4 bolts holding the transmission against the transaxle shaft going to the front) to simply roll out
the engine and gearbox backwards? If not, will I need to lower the engine and gearbox before being able to pull it out backwards?
2) How much (way is required) until the shaft going to the front is free so that I can lower everything, will I have enough space at the rear to clear sufficiently
or do I still need to remove the middle silencer ?

Any other useful tipps and tricks here?

Thanks!

Cheers

Benjamin

Ben,

You really should have the engine and the transmission on two different hydraulic jacks, since you need to work it at different height to lower the trans/engine unit. Like lower the engine a little, then the trans, and the engine, slide it out a little under the two support forks clears and then back lower engine, and then tranny etc

Once you unbolt the front drive union you can slide the torque tube forward so the transmission will clear the opening without any issues.
