Okay, so I tried searching, but was unable to find an answer, so here it is:

How do I go about removing the hood crest that is on the car? I have a silver crest to replace it with, and assumed that the lock nuts would be able to be backed off with a socket--wrong!

Since the access points are just slightly larger than the socket, and not large enough to get standard needle-nose pliers into so as to grasp the existing nut, what is the appropriate way to remove the existing crest?

I've always used a screwdriver that has a mm sized socket on the end. It's not a removable socket. They come in set from like 5mm - 10mm. I wish I could remember the size you need. You need to remove the speed nuts it order to get the crest off and AFAIK a socket is the only way. The access points or "holes: on the underside of the hood is where you access it. Looks like you need a thin wall socket or a set of screwdriver sockets like I described above

You'll need a deep socket to get over the studs on the back of the crest. IIRC it's a 7mm nut. I didn't have any issue when I replaced mine a couple months ago.

Use a 1/4 " ratched with a 2 or 3 inch extension. I beleive the socket you need is an 8mm socket.
The nut holding the crest sometimes has a sticky substance that keeps it from comming cleanly off.
I have put a peice of tape on the inside of the socket to make the nut fit in tightly to assist removing it.
Very easy to do.
You may want to put the new seal for the crest in hot water, to assist you in putting it around the new crest.

Thanks for the replies guys! Looks like I will need to work it a bit more. I was able to access the speed nuts with a socket and get them to spin, but they didn't seem to be backing off. I'll try putting some tape in the socket as Al suggests too.

The speed nuts may be stripped then. You may want to slightly pull from the crest while you turn the speed nuts. Hopefully it re-threads itself out again.

Taking it off is the easy part by far. Putting on a crest using a New gasket now thats a pita.

When I changed mine out last week I used some dental floss and lifted the crest slightly. I was then able to slide a thin credit card (it was one of those fake promotional ones they mail you) underneath the crest and lifted on that as I backed off the nuts and they finally came off. Good luck!

Respectful MAYDAY on that one.

We spent an hour on it and couldn't get it quite right, so I've purchased another gasket in the hope that the fit'll be better.

Anyone got the "magic trick" for inserting the crest into the gasket - and keeping it there during the install?

I've heard letting it sit in boiling water for a while softens it up enough to allow it to stretch over the new crest. I performed a sacrilege and reused the old one.

Removal is easy if you gently lift the crest while twisting your nuts ...

So, lemme see if I got this:

You fished your 212 degree gasket from the roiling waters and quickly, before it cooled and lost its pliability, applied it to your hood crest.

Blisters rising on your fingertips, you bravely held the two together and applied them to your hood, holding them there as the nuts were tightened?

You can also try a little bit of silicone on the back side of the crest to help keep the new seal in place....
