95 LWF chip vs. chip: there is a difference
#31
I had horrendous stalling issues with my 1996 when my build was finished which would have been attributable to the LWF and possibly my more aggressive camshafts. After some chip fiddling (not including the chip which is the subject of this thread) I did not get much improvement. As a Rennlister pointed out to me in a PM, it is all down to the programming. Get the right chip for your car or your current one reprogrammed (if possible) and you are away. I couldn't find one and finally went to MOTEC which could more easily be programmed for my car than fiddling with my chip and I have no stalling issues. The original chip just cannot handle the LWF so you need a modified one or a new computer system with a tailored map.

my apologies - seemed appropriate as it was in lorenfb's post.
i am somewhat surprised that steve weiner responded to the doubting thomases! as he said, "I've seen this discussion many times over the past 12 years, both here and on Pelican"

Yes, I've seen it too and Lauren always has the same point of view. While I understand his doubts, I was also very doubtful before I've put my first chip into an E30 and was fairly well amazed how that changed the character of that car.
My simple opinion is that manufacturers choke the engines to achieve slightly better fuel mileage and to comply with EPA. If a chip can alleviate this and not knock the engine into oblivion - it's a great improvement. And most good chips do the job from what I've heard over the years on Rennlist.
Steve was very gracious to invite Lauren for a dyno run. I'd take him up on that offer in a split second! But even if max HP/torque do not increase, this is not what I'm after in a chip, The same way many of us put in LWF in the car - certainly not to increase power, but to modify the car's behavior to suit our driving needs.

"Steve was very gracious to invite Lauren for a dyno run."
Let's hear from this guy (Lauren) that Steve invited.
He hasn't made any comment about that yet.
I sure wish I got that invitation.
And by the way, why would anyone who does quality machine shop work
get involved selling chips, which are bought from other suppliers
and then resold, to make a few extra dollars? Is one's business really that
marginal?

Man...I wished these chip discussions don't always degrade like this.
Both Steve W's and Loren obvious have much more knowledge that any of us here, and can/does provide some very useful information in keeping our 15 years old cars running. I'd hate to see any of them get fed up and leave b/c of these discussions.
Don't know why, but it should be obvious by now from the many discussion that aftermarket chips do indeed push the performance and bump up to the safety margin a bit. Some are good and others are downright dangerous so it's better to go with a reputable maker with no complains than one off ebay. Performance gains will probably var depending on the car, its condition, and its operating environment. A poorly maintained car running 89 gas isn't going to get much gain, maybe even negative, than one in top condition running 93 gas.

I also believe that invitation was again extended by Steve right here in this thread. As a matter pf fact I'd be willing to make sure that this happens as, if nothing else, it wou;d be of benefit to 993 community.
Steve, could you confirm that Loren is invited (sorry for name misspelling)?

lorenfb - you said, "And by the way, why would anyone who does quality machine shop work

so -why would they not? -or is making a few extra dollars against your principles? you talk as if it is a reprehensible thing to do...........
nile13 - i had a comforti chip put in my E30 M3 [a car which was known to have little torque below 3750 rpm from the otherwise excellent s14engine] - the extra mid range torque made a good car, very good.
surely, it is uncontested that a suitable chip will make the 993 engine better...........................?

x50, Comforti chip is what I had as well. Besides the midrange bump the damn thing would just sing all teh way to redline instead of fighting with you. I remember noticing a week after installing that I'm winding it to redline in every single gear that I was using. Put a smile on my face to hear that engine.
And that was from a pedestrian M20B25. I can imagine what S14 felt and sounded like with Jim Comforti's touch.

I invited you several years ago on Pelican as well as here on Rennlist.
I even invited you to a face-to-face discussion when we came down to German Autofest as a sponsor in 2006. It would have been great to meet you in person and "debate" several things with you for fun,...

Never been there (don't have time to waste at Mickey Mouse events)
AND never met face-to-face. Maybe Loren Biggs who builds race cars
in the east valley of SoCal.
Obviously a little confused!

Who has the greater incentive to appear confused - lorenfb or steve weiner?
I have steve's engine management chip in my 993 and it's worked perfectly for 7 years.
Anyone have lorenfb's for comparison?
German Autofest 2006 and lorenfb says, "Never been there (don't have time to waste at Mickey Mouse events)........................rather unpleasant thing to say on Rennlist!
