We had the same thing happen to a customer a few years ago trying to sell his Evo IIRC. His 964 was at our shop for work, and one day he just dropped off the face of the earth. Finally got a call a few months later from his dad. Sad deal.

In 1986, twin brothers I knew from college at ASU wanted to upgrade their '84 Carrera to the recently reintroduced to the US market 930. (They were from UAE, and the family money probably could have bought all of Scottsdale. Really nice guys, though.)

So they advertise the 911 in the paper. The way the story goes is that the prospective "buyer" told a friend that day he was going to get a Porsche one way or another that day. Arranges to meet the guys at their condo. Shoots them both, I think one body was found inside and the other wrapped in a carpet dragged outside and left after neighbors heard shots. He takes off. Car is spotted several hours later up in Boulder City, NV. (~5 hours away) Cops pursue. After a short chase the car lazily rolls to a stop, the perp having shot himself in the head.

So this stuff isn't new.

There is something to be said for trading your car at the dealer or selling to people on Rennlist. I can't imagine that happening. They can title that story how owning a BMW can kill you. That sucks!

A similar thing happened here in Newport Beach with a retired couple trying to sell their Yacht. They took the prospective purchasers out on a sea trial. The couple was held up, forced to sign sale documents. An anchor was then wrapped around them and they were thrown overboard. Makes me cringe just to think about it. Its is very scary out there. Be cautious and be prepared.

Any sense in starting a survey on how many of us have CWP's? Both my wife and I have had 'em for over 10 years. We go to the range at least every couple of weeks. Great sport, too. I've been shooting since I was 3 yrs. old...seriously!

You won't get too many people from Maryland, for it is very difficult to procure a CCW and to prove that you have a reason to carry a concealed weapon. This is a good incentive to complete transactions at home where you not only know the lay of the land but can also legally (in Maryland) defend yourself if you're in danger.

Yup, in Florida that is called a forceable felony and deadly force can legally be used.

Both were lucky that day.

The Porsche owner could have had a really messy interior.

Lock your doors. I always do and keep your situational awareness high.

I am probably going to be selling my 993TT this spring/summer and have been wondering if I should sell it myself, sell it via consignment or sell it to a specialized Porsche shop. After reading this I think its worth getting a little less $$ and not have to worry about strangers coming to look at the car.

I did a cash deal with a guy on a 964 a few years back.
he told me up front it would be cash... I was on high alert, obviously.
He turned out to be a nice guy so my precautions (HK 40) were not necessary...
but if it smells weird or has the potential to go sideways, you have to plan.

When you sell from your home you have the advantage of 'sizing up' the people from your 'armed' protected home. If the people that drove up in your driveway misrepresented themselves or look shady you still have the advantage. Police can't profile but YOU can! The PC people can holler all they want. Neighbors or other family members can be present and watch out for you if you want to proceed. Otherwise meet in a VERY public place with many people around. You increase your odds ten-fold by never meeting prospective buyers alone no matter where you are.

....another moral of the story....don't ever do a private deal regardless of value in NYC
