Do 993's have child seat anchors? My wife wants me to sell my 993 if not. HELP!
Hello,
It's happening. I have had years of blissful driving of my 95 993 C4, but now have a little one on the way. I have had cars come and go, but always keep my 993 (original owner).
We are down to a two car household - the 993 and a SUV. As are are not in a position right now to get a 3rd car, my wife is telling me it's time to sell the 993 as we need a car that can hold a baby seat. Ha Ha Ha, yeah right. Like I am going to sell my Porsche.
So help! I see that Canadian models have a hard anchor point, but my US model does not. Any advice? What have you done to anchor the seats?
Thanks for any information! Really.. THANKS!!
- Scott

There are no LATCH type anchors. Rare on cars built before 2002 (+/-). You need to use the seat belt. A rear-facing "infant" seat won't fit at all. The rear seats aren't deep enough for me to be 100% confident about the stability of a baby seat there. I built a wooden base to provide a longer support area and protect the leather and use a Mighty-tight device on the belt. The result is "OK," but I don't use it often. I think the seat manufacturers or someone doesn't like Mighty-tight, so use caution.
How often would the 3 of you plan to be in the car at the same time? To allow room for a baby seat, the passenger seat needs to be moved up, which may be too far for some people.
You might need to find a way to add a cheap, safe commuter car. You can get an '03 and up Saab 9-3 for under $10K. Other IIHS picks are located here: http://www.iihs.org/ratings/tsp_archive_2006.html

Yes, there are options and many threads on this forum about seats. It gets much easier after 1yr as the baby gets bigger and transitions to forward facing seats. There are safe options available.
dcdude asked a critical question - how often will you be transporting the baby out of necessity??? I recall years ago I bought an Mitsu Evo8 so I could have a sedan that would transport my wife and three kids. After a year of ownership (and fun), I realized that I had NEVER had my entire family in the car! So I sold it and bought a 993
Also, practically speaking, you will be throwing away $1500-2500 in taxes to change cars (assuming you stay under $25k). That kind of money could be going to much better things, like a baby shopping spree for your wife!

Just do some searching and the options will become apparent (search Britax Roundabout and that should pull up several threads). I did not use my 993 during my daughter's first year due to the rear-facing infant seat (others have fit these in there cars just fine- I already had another car with a backseat), but mounted some high quality harness hardware to the seatbelt attachment points in the backseat and have been using the LATCH system on her current seat (Britax Roundabout)- everything works great! Good luck and don't sell your car!

Here is a link to locating the tether mounting point in a 993.

If I am not mistaken, Canadian cars require child seat anchors. I have mine somewhere in the garage, I believe they were never installed.
Not sure how they mount up, but would be glad to unload them for 1/2 of new price.
Please PM if interested.
Best,
Matt

Think of it this way. Your new arrival will only be in the backwards facing seat for a year or so. Thereafter, you can use a regular child seat - and there are lots of postings on this site about which work.
My rear 993 seats (with 3 point seatbelts) are recognized by the State of Washington as real "child seats" useful for kids over (I think) 20 lbs or so). I use them all the time for my two granddaughters - one of whom (now 7) is almost big enough to sit in the front seat (I think 80 lbs is minimum).
I'd try an keep the 993. Your child (ren) will love riding in the back. I used to regularly take trips with 3 adults in several of my earlier 911s. (but I was usually the one who had to sit in the back - with my legs across to the back of the other seat - in order to fit). We also (back in those days) used to put 3 small children in the back of my 1972 911 - (no seat belts, but no requirements for one back then).
Good luck.

I know I make lots of friends when I post this viewpoint, but in this era of Ram Trucks, Expeditions, Tahoe's and TEXTING, it seems to me there are a slew of cars with more metal around them and at a better ride height, hence a bit safer, to go out and drive around morons, than a 911 derivative.

I got an airbag cut off switch and put the kids in the front when they were little. My wife is small so she went in the back if all 3 of us went somewhere together in my car (very rare).

Very easy to secure a child seat in there. I'll post pictures later tomorow. Don't sell it too soon, I have 3 kids, they've all been in there from there birth to 5 years old with the agreament of my wife.

You may want to look into BK harness mounts which some have used. I used rennline harness mounts for the lower attachment points, used the LATCH belt on the child seat, and everything fit nice and tight. No need for seat belt or mighty tite.
