How about just connecting your trickle charger to the battery leads before you remove them, or use jumper cables to another battery.
As long as whatever charger you are using puts out DC and is regulated, no problem. You can also use a DC power supply set to 12.8.
As for using jumper cables, you have a far better chance of shorting things. Besides, that sounds way more complicated than hooking up a battery and plug that is out of the way to the cigarette lighter outlet.

Not so much conversions, but just the way cars are set-up differently for different markets and also what the market is used to. We have daytime running lights, other countries do not.
The lighter outlet on my Honda is off with the ignition off; my Carrera's outlet stays on which I prefer.
Anyway, to the point, if the outlet is off, owners have the choice of converting it if they choose to use the outlet for charging purposes or charging the battery directly. I prefer and use the latter.
