If you mean the sprayed on vinyl undercoat, why would anyone remove that? Not only does it soundproof as someone already mentioned, it also protects the metal from being sand/stone blasted while in use.

As for the heater tubes, those are stainless steel; the cosmoline can be wiped off with varsol or kerosene or gas.

I was actually talking about cream colored thick chunky oatmeal like substance sprayed on the suspension, chassis, tubes (not heat exchanger/headers) and practiccally every where else in the wheel well/engine/underside.

Could it be just my car? Lord I hope not. A wire brush will take it off(dusty), and so will paint thinner (vapors) but both are messy and very difficult.

No way I woudl touch the interior under the carpet. Did that in my Acua race car a few years ago and all the work saved me a whopping 10 lbs...after nearly 40 hours of work, cost of rags and petrolium products and thousenads of brain cells killed from the fumes.

-then again, it explains a lot.

you might want to take pics and show us.

The factory sound proof used to be black, but it may have changed colors over the years, and it's hard as rock. It shouldn't come off that easy with wire wheel, and it is generally painted over with body color.

It could be some sort of dealer applied undercoating.

It is a milky white material that was sprayed and over time has turned chunkey with presumed road debris?
The last two photos show areas that I have still to work on..

Good thing he didn't confuse the factory undercoating and the Cosmoline.

Does it look like he used a wire wheel on the aluminum? Hopefully not.

Ruh Roh...and what if I did? The car is now a dry weather only car as we have others for rain, sleet, snow duty.

The whole purpose of this thread was to enquire about effect of removal on market value...and maybe an opinion or two if I were to ever take it to a PCA show.

Because IF the aluminum components are clear anodized, wire bushing will have taken care of that.

I would think putting wire brush mark would be worse than removing Cosmoline if you are worried about market value.

Ahh good points.

Luckily, I used a fine gauge wire so there are no stroke marks to speak of....which is probably why it is taking such a long time to remove the crap. As far as the clear anodize, I guess only time will tell.

Maybe I should just take it to the next level next winter and polish the stuff out.

Here is what I did to my previous toy:
