Default It's only funny because it all worked out....

Drove up toward Helen today to get homemade goodies from my favorite German Baptist bakery. Parked the car, locked the door. Came out with one load off goodies. Opened door, put goodies in, locked door and went back inside to get second load.

Walked out with second load, keyfob would not open door...

Screwed around with the fob...No results...

Knew I had extra battery in glove box....

Went back inside and told the folks that I was going to have to set the alarm off to get in the car...They were puzzled as to why the key would set the alarm off but nodded their understanding (And then watched out the window)...

Openend the door and the alarm went off...Dove into the car grabbed the package of batteries, ripped them open...Wrong size!...

Jerked hood latch, jumped out of car, opened hood, (People inside still watching ) tore into the handy, dandy Porsche tool kit and disconnected the ground cable.

Blissful silence....

Called Alan at German Car for advice on work-around...No such thing (I already knew that)...Alan volunteers to bring a battery (From 75 miles away) but I tell him to stand by until I can look around Cleveland.

Call my mother-in-law who lives about 10 miles away...She's home and jumps in her car to come get me (Yes, she is the best MIL ever!).

We go to Rite Aid and Yes! Yes! Yes! they have the battery...

Back to the bakery...Put battery in fob....Connect ground cable to battery...All hell breaks loose again (Yes, the folks inside are still watching )

Press button on fob....VICTORY!!!!

Hug my MIL's neck...Turn to the bakery window and jauntily wave goodbye ...Owl-eyed, they wave back

Yes, I purchased a second battery...The correct size this time.

Time for a Guiness Extra Foreign...

Terry-
Get yourself one of those pill vials they sell at the pharmacy counter and put a spare battery (the correct size ) in it, then put it on with your key fob.

What, just what the hell do Germans think about when they design anything electronic? I ask that as a former electrical engineer who worked with German engineers for years. Arrrgh. Glad I don't have an immobilizer in my car.

PS. Terry, very nice touch to tell the people in the bakery that alarm is about to go off. My kind of guy! And hats off to your mother-in-law.

There is a small group of German Baptists living in White County, Georgia (Cleveland/Helen area) that, if I remember correctly moved here from South Florida. They, to the degree possible nowadays, live by the "old ways"...The men wear beards, straw hats, white shirts, suspenders, etc. and the women wear long dresses, and lace bonnets/caps, much in the style of Mennonites. They are astonishingly accomplished craftsmen, farmers, and, in this case, bakers. Everything in the shop is made on site and I've not found anything they do that isn't good.

Nope...It's called "Bake Shop" and is about a mile out of Cleveland on the Helen highway.

As long as they don't design immobilizers

In a world where wikileaks can happen and Stuxnet lurks, surely there is a hacker out there who could reprogram our immobilizers into non-existence, yes? Do we have to offer an X-Prize to make it happen?

I have not had any problems with it on either of the 2 993's I've owned.

....but then I have monthly sacrifices of small critters and an occasional brat, and a few German beers in the fridge in the garage....

I also stick pasties on the headlights when I'm not driving her....
