Default ID Original shocks

I believe a refreshing of my shocks may be in order. 1995 with NB with 52k miles. Seem to have some not perfect handling going on, I have had the car a month. Seems to be not as stable as the '88 from 5 years ago. Before an alignment check, I will look over the suspension.

So as to ID what I have, what markings would ID oem shocks and springs?

What would be the reccomendation of a OEM replacement shock? (Don't want to start mods, that is a slippery slope!).

Thanks for any assistance!

Just in the middle of changing my stock suspension to M030's and HD's.

OEM shocks are either Bodge or Monroe - should be written on the shock but probably covered by dirt. Mine where Bodge units.

As for sprngs I had M029's - and you can tell this with the colour markings on the springs.

Thanks to Viken who posted this information before:

Front Springs:

ROW M029: 993.343.531.00 - Red
ROW M033: 993.343.531.04 - Blue
ROW M030 & Turbo: 965.343.531.01 - Orange/Green
USA M032: 964.343.531.11 - Green
USA M030 & Turbo: 964.343.531.12 - Orange

Rear Springs:

ROW M029: 993.333.531.02* - Violet or 993.333.531.03* - Grey
ROW M033: 993.333.531.21* - White or 993.333.531.22* - Lilac
ROW M033 Carrera S/4S: 993.333.531.23 - Pink
ROW M030: 993.333.531.11 - Brown
ROW Turbo: 993.333.531.16 - Red
USA M032: 993.333.531.18* - Gold/Yellow or 993.333.531.19* - Silver
USA M032 Carrera S/4S: 993.333.531.18 - Gold/Yellow
USA M030: 993.333.531.13 - Light Blue
USA Turbo: 993.333.531.17 - Yellow/Green

* Depending on vehicle equipment: With or without air conditioner in combination with wheel size and transmission version.

If you use search and read up on suspension upgrades - you should find that people tend to go Bilsten HD's or Koni sport or FSD. OEM shocks don't last long. This is a good street option.

Bilstein PSS10's, KW's, etc - are also popular upgrades for the more track focused. The cost is slightly more for the coilover setup - but some people also say that it's worth the extra dollars to have ability to adjust settings.

http://p-car.com/susfaq.html has a good overview. You'll want to do a little extra searching to see what problems people have had with going particular setups. I.e you'll need extra lock collars with HD's.

Other than a normal alignment, you'll want to know that 993's have something called kinematic toe adjust. Read up on that too. I'm trying to find someone to do that for me in Perth but it's not looking good so far.

Good luck with the upgrade.

Regards

Ken

Thanks for the info, Ken! No major upgrade, just a shock refresh.

After taking a closer look at the shocks, they appear original. The rubber at the top (bump stop?) is crumbly and I can pick of pieces. I also noticed a height difference from side to side. Did not get a look at a label to see maker.

I would like to keep original springs, and get OEM or comparable. Would I need to know if Boge or Monroe prior to ordering?

Cliff notes: Replacing shocks, want to stay stock, Springs & Height, what shocks to use?

Yep, I feel in a few years the slippery slope will start, but not yet.

Last time a checked (a week or so ago) Monroe was the only one available from Porsche.
You could also go aftermarket with Koni FSDs and retain same springs.

Not to nudge you down the slope... but:
- You will need to get an aligment/CB done after struts and shocks are installed
- Porsche ROW (M033 or M030) Springs are <$400

Just sayin'...
