You're my hero, Ken. ...& I bet you were to a bunch of folks who enjoyed seeing the curves of your C4S in the snow & mountains.

Another testament to how hardy, practical, & yet classic & exotic 993s can be -- all at the same time. As Mark mentioned, your relatively low-clearance ride making it through through 6" of snow was especially notable.

My board & I should soon be enjoying powder, too, in one of my favorite vehicles for wear & tear ... someone else's -- friend's driving her SUV

^^ Not to be outdone, Saab recently produced these sleds & a video to tie into their Viggen jet heritage

Hi ken, no issues with big reds clearance on the 17" cups?

Ken, keep on cruising. I've put winter tires on my DD C2S since I bought it in 2002. The front end is a little light but that's not a problem with sensible driving in snowy conditions found in NJ and PA. Every year I pass a lot of front drive cars, with worn out or wrong tires, that are stuck.

Today, I gave my car a Christmas present: new Dunlop SP Winter Sport 3D tires on the aftermarket turbo-style 17" wheels. Fronts are 205/50 on 7.5" ET52 wheels. Rears are 245/40 on 9" ET15.

The Dunlops replace worn nine-year-old Michelin Alpin tires. Michelin no longer makes the 255/40/17 size that was on the rear.

LOL. I'm up here in Tahoe from SF right now and was hoping I'd spot Ken. I didn't but I did see something peculiar on the way up (unfortunately no pics).

At chain control over on highway 50, I was three cars behind a Porsche Boxster. I never caught up to it, so I couldn't tell if it had chains on. But, my understanding was that Caltrans won't let any car by that isn't AWD without them, even if they have snow tires.

I came back and was curious if it might be, because my other car (an E46 M3) can't run with snow chains due to clearance issuance. Lo and behold:

I had the 993 Big Reds and 993TT rotors (5mm closer to the wheel than the 965 rotors) on my RSA with Cup I wheels and had no issues whatsoever. They fit under OEM 17" wheels just fine. I've used both 7" and 8" wide Cup I wheels in the front and 8" and 9" wide in the rear. No problem at all.

A bit off topic, does anyone have any experience with narrow 16" wheels (6" front and 7" rear) on the 993 ?

I have access to some ice tires (rally tires with 8mm studs) and the will not fit wheels that are wider than 7". The intention is to use this setup for some fun runs on local frozen lake tracks.

check out this video, sorry about the music :S : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jTNDMK0fpVM

Yesterday when I got back to the car. 4 kids with their boards were walking back to the car at the same time and now understand a little bit more about 911s. Even overhead some people in the lodge wondering how the "Porsh" got there. Really funny to be the oddball in the land of the SUV.

You're up and here early!

Should have seen how much was on the car Friday. Probably 2-3" more. But I used up all of my phone battery during the day.

"Fun" as it is, looking forward to this Friday with the storms having passed, and the snow being merely a backdrop. I'll bring a camera and try for a beauty shot.

Do the 2 diameters fall in the % difference allowed?
205/55/16=205/50/17 or 225/45/17 front
225/50/16=255/40/17 rear
I thought these were the sizes?

Look at each tire manufacturer's spec page. I was going for optimal performance for my application, and wanted the narrowest rear tire possible. (If I lived in the snow, and wanted to screw around I'd probably try 205s all the way around just to try it out.)

I'll leave it to others more technical to actually comment on the ABS and 964 v. 993 AWD systems aspects of keeping front and rear diameters equal. Realize that 3% difference on a ~25" O.D. tire gives you a +/- of 3/4". That's a LOT of margin for error.
