From the recent post about the differences between the '96 and '97 Turbos, I learned that I have an ignition light.
I always wondered what the little black rubber grommet was for when I was conditioning the leather dash and waxing the carbon fiber. Only problem is, the bulb must be burnt out because it does not illuminate.
When should it light? When the doors open? When the headlights are on?
Is the bulb serviceable with out taking the dash apart? How?
According to the Parts department at Sunset:
light bulb part # 900-631-132-90
$1.17
Thanks.

Sanyata, the links you gave me are for a different issue. I'm asking about the small light bulb that illuminates the ignition for the key.

The downlight above the ignition switch is linked to the rest of the interior lighting. It should come on when you open the door, and go out automatically after a minute or so. Mine still works so I've never tried to remove it, but looking at the PET it appears it's the same light/housing used for the ashtray and it presses in from behind. Probably accessible after removing the gas gauge. Here's the PET..

Thanks, Jon Paul! I think I'll order the bulb, and let my mechanic do this in the spring when the car comes out of winter storage.
You're welcome.

Well, I'm not comfortable removing any of my gauges. My mechanic (Fischer Motors) does great work. Glad to pay them for a job done right. I can focus my time onto other tasks that I'm good at.Originally Posted by x50type
Yes, changing these heavy bulbs is best left to your mechanic!

I did this over the weekend. Don't have that bulb so I installed one. Gotta believe changing the bulb is even easier.
My guess would be to pull out the second gauge from the left and push out the bulb holder and swap in the new bulb. Shouldn't take you more than 5 minutes. Removing the gauge is really simple, it's held in by friction and a rubber gasket. Just pull/wiggle it out. Very easy.
Give it a shot before having your mechanic do it.

The key is "gentle" and take your time....and using a non-serrated butter knife or putty knife covered in masking tape to prevent scratching.Originally Posted by No HTwo O

Tony, NEED INFO!!!! My '96 doesn't have it. I'd love to have it. Is it a simple thing to add? Any crazy re-wiring? THANKS in advance.Originally Posted by tonypai

I followed this thread.
Bought this LED for $1.99
Removed the gauge, poked a hole in the leather, pushed the light through, ran the wires into the trunk and spliced them according to the thread.
Voila. 30 minutes, now I can see where to put the key. Beauty is that the light is tied in with the other interior lights, goes off after 20 seconds, goes off after the engine is started.
Good luck. Tony
