Love those cars. I had a 2004 E55. I understand that people get scared of these cars out of warranty. Not sure if it is a rational fear or not. I suspect that they are bullet proof.

But Mercedes electronics in that era are scary.

bulletproof they are absolutely not.

I wouldn't own one without a warranty

+1 Fortunately no direct experience on my part but indirect through a friend who had a myriad of problems with his. Only with an extended warranty IMHO.

Having just bought an MB (not E55), I would agree that I have heard of a lot of issues, however it's tough to determine how many cars are affected vs. how many on in use with no issues. Of course, it's sucks when the failure affects you.

The forums tend to magnify problems and in my case I found as many or more MB owners with over 50K trouble free miles as those that reported multiple failures.

At certain pricepoints, there is money in reserve for out of warranty repairs. Perhaps this is one of them?

I've the previous generation and it's been very reliable so far. A few other folks on the board own that generation as well. The problem I have with this model is a lot of them (if not all) have been driven very hard, drag raced etc., by the youngins.

supercharger bearings, possible airmatic issues, intercooler fluid pump, shaky subframe bolts, some electronic issues, SBC brakes, etc.

I have an 05 S500...when I got it, it needed a good bit of work on the stupid TPMS system and a few abs sensors. Aside from that its been fine, but its super low miles.

I have a 2002 E55 with 130K on it. I have had my fair share of issues with it, but nothing related to the motor or tranny so far (watch my luck turn). Just replaced the rear wheel bearing!!! and, of ALL things, the headliner is coming down. This is a car that sold for 80K when new. Hard to swallow that this would come up. I had a 1991 lexus 400 LS with 200K and zero issues on the interior. MB tells me the headliner issues are common in AZ TX and FL due to the heat! Oh well, another weekend project!

I don't expect cars to be bulletproof

But I do recognize that some cars are more reliable then others, even within the same brand and model

I think a major factor in determining a "reliable" car is if an owner is willing to undertake the maintenance of it, warranty or not

Some are just more willing then others

Some might say: "You have to pay to play"

I have been considering selling my BMW and getting an E63. I test drove a new one awhile back and was impressed. Very impressed. Figure a low mileage 2007/2008 that sold for 100K can be had for just over half the price. I'd pick up an extended warranty just in case.

i have an 05 e55 with 50k and we have not had any issues.... knock on wood. I have the extended warranty for another 25k miles.
my SL55 05 with 28K miles had more issues, all covered under warranty. These are truly fantastic machines. breathtaking.
When you spend 100K and up for cars, doesn't one expect to pay more for performance and maintenance?

example

vs.

fully agreed. But despite my love for MB, sometimes even the best maintenance won't prevent some stupid electronic glitches that are quite frankly not inexpensive.

That said, my extended warranty on my S will be up in march 2012, and I intend to keep it. Love that car.

Looks really clean inside out for the mileage. I've seen cars with a lot less miles that had the front driver seat all worn out.

Good luck
