Default Tiptronic Manual Shift Issue

When I am manually shifting my 96 Tiptronic S, while in 2nd gear somewhere between 2200-2600 RPMs there seems like another shift takes place. It's almost as if there is a lower 2nd gear and a higher 2nd gear. It's hard to tell if this is occurring while in automatic mode since gear shifts from 2nd to 3rd, and 3rd to 4th take place around 2200 RPMs. Someone said that I may need to let the computer reset itself since the previous owner may have driven it gently causing this. Any ideas why it is doing this? Is this normal?

Yep, torque converter. No worries.

Yeah - feels like gear 1.5.
Normal. Built in for a smoother gear change as I recall reading somewhere.
So shifting at a high rev will see it not occur.

okay, thanks...I usually shift into 3rd (manual mode) around 3000 RPMs just that it has that double shift in 2nd that seems a bit weird...not looking to break any land speed records just wanting to make sure she doesn't need some tweaking? Anyone else having this problem with a 96 993 Tiptronic S?

i think its the torque converter too.
fwiw i used to drive in '3' around town
and it avoided or adjusted some of the upshifting.

It's absolutely normal and a silly design IMO. I also thought I had a defective tip when I first bought my car as many others have done, "convertor lockdown/up?". You'll learn to ignore it.

no problem, welcome! advice: learn to drive that tip in manual mode, it sucks in auto mode. also, it doesn't downshift to 1st gear when stopped, another pet peeve of mine. Finally, don't listen to all of the tip bashing on this site. enjoy!

Once the oil's up to operating temp, let the rpms get way past 3k before upshifting. The engine will be the better for it.

Shifts around 5K get the "full symphony" effect. Enjoy
