I agree this would produce a significant bump up in sound quality but with possibly the the need for a DSP and a second amp for the rear speakers I would term this a high end solution.

If anyone has a good solution for adding a subwoofer, please share.
Thanks

I wonder if anyone has tried to mount it in the frunk and fish a vent tube from it into the cabin? Seems like the only way to do it without giving up something in the cabin.

Or better vent it into the HVAC system in the cowl! Hmmmm, now that might just work and one can modulate its output with the fresh air lever!!!

Yah, Yah, that's the ticket!

It really depends on how large of a subwoofer you want and how much sealed/vented volume the box for the subwoofer will require. There isn't much space in a 911 for such things and most of us would rather have that space free for other things. Probably the best workable option would be a rear-seat delete designed with subwoofer(s) in mind.

Rod Birch at Car Audio Innovations sells subwoofer boxes designed for 911s that fit in the rear seat footwells. They're quite small though which limit the possible subwoofers that they can work with (not just based upon diameter, but also based box volume requirements).

I'm wondering if it might be possible to fit 7" or 8" mid-woofers/sub-woofers in the door panels instead of 5.25" or 6.5" mid-woofers. That should provide a bit more bass without taking up additional space.

Nope, not so. A suitable outboard DSP (Mosconi 4 to 6, Audison unit, etc) can be had for about $300-$400 then coupled with a 4ch amp (under passenger seat size; Alpine, Pioneer, etc) for about $300. Use the stock Becker/Porsche head unit as merely a control-pre and you're in business. Started anyway.... I/Os, BT, aux can be facilitated at the DSP. Re-use the OEM RCA out /ISO/12v and speaker wiring. For about $600 + bucks your on the way to a very nice stealth HiFi upgrade.. ...ditch the idea of crummy 4x6 rear speakers.

Gawd dam a set of 3.6 ignition wires is in the $450-$500 neighborhood.

True. I'm still wondering where to place said outboard DSP. Some are long and flat. Others are short and tall.

Just an FYI. If one uses extension rigs for the speaker mounted to the door a larger driver can be used as the rear of the speaker does bot protrude as far into the interior of the OE cutout in the door facia. I used a one inch thick extension ring. Rings can also be doubled up if less space between the speaker and the premium speaker cover is desired.
Just an FYI for those who wish to improve base responce on the door speakers by trying a larger driver.

Andy, without the cutout rings added how much depth would you say there is in the door cavity?

Default So true ... there are multiple ways to skin this cat ..

So true. I've about 5 or 6 various sized 6.75", 7", 5.75" low mid woofers with varied points of resonance; Fs 40hz to 70hz or so.
Most can fit the 993 door with a spacer as suggested pp000830. And the carpeted cover of the HiFi option fits right over this: Stealth baby.

There are 2 of these 18wu 7" Scan-speak woofers in route from Scan.. The driver can be tuned to -3db down at 65cycles or better, running out of steam at 900hz on the top end. The practice is to cross at 700hz and up to a Dyn 140/2 3" dome running out to 5Khz. The 993 door mounted tweeters will simply piggy back the Dyn at 5Khz and above.
http://www.scan-speak.dk/datasheet/pdf/18wu-4741t00.pdf

There's another Seas 6.50" woofer I'd like to try as well .... and priced at $95.00ea this is more reasonable then the $250 ea for the above Scan-speak 18wu units. The cabin of our 993s have huge LF gain nodes. These can easily be over powered, acoustically speaking; this is not ideal.

Here's a link to that Seas 6" woofer. seas h1480-08
Its specifically made for a Siegfried Linkwitz speaker kit. (AES)

I'll throw up a few pic's as the coupe is a rolling acoustic hobby room.

Later, gotta zooooom.

P.S., the Mosconi DSP units are slightly larger than an AMEX card, say 3.5" x 5" X 1.5" .... easily an under the passenger seat set up, No?

Depends on if a box is in place behind the speaker for the Premium sound system no box is present so it is 3 inches or so however,
its not about depth, it is about the diameter of the cone shaped section speaker frame clearing the hole. By using the spacers the speaker frame does not need as much diameter to clear the hole. One would want to use an extension ring anyway to bring the speaker up close behind the stock grill on the Premium OE replacement. For the non premium replacement the rings have a smooth black finish that look like part of the speaker grill that comes with the replacement speakers and will also allow for a larger speaker. The rings are available in various depths so one can determine the depth desired. The installer at Best Buy has them on the wall to look at.

Andy :-)
