BTW, batteries often have multiple names, so you might also see these:

Duracell: MN21
VARTA: V23GA
EVEREADY: A23
NEDA: 1811A
IEC: 3LR50
Panasonic: LR-V08
ELPA: SES-23A
MS21
VR22
EL12
GP 23AE
GP-23A

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A23_battery
An A23 battery (also known as 8LR23 or ANSI-1181A) is a dry cell-type battery, 8-cell device with a nominal voltage of 12 V. The higher voltage is necessary for the radio frequency-transmitting and receiving devices which A23 batteries often power.

How often should these be replaced? My understanding that waiting until it dies could be problematic with immobilizer.

depends on how often you use it. if you drive daily locking/unlocking the car several times a day you should notice when the batteries are getting weak. i.e may not lock/unlock the first time, or you need to be progressively closer. I would replace it when I noticed those symptoms.

With the new batteries I can lock/unlock from 4m away! It has been so long I'd forgotten the range. I had been down to. Half a meter!
