Nice 1999 Carrera 2 with 74 K miles, 3.4 liter engine, 6-speed. Metallic Black with Boxter red interior, sport seats, xenons, sunroof, Porsche sports rims, Bose Premium, runs great, new front brakes ( rotors/pads), new battery. 82K when new. Looking to trade for well maintained Lotus Elise ( little or no track time), original ( little or no modification), no accidents. Email me for pictures.

* Location: San Mateo area
* it's NOT ok to contact this poster with services or other commercial interests

it's possible that you've missed the context of the post. It's 996 guys poking fun at the fact that their cars HAVE NO ISSUES.

Don't believe so. All of the water cooled street production engines, save the GT3/Turbos based on the air cooled architecture have issues.

But this is not any different than the 356/912 crowd making fun of the 911 guys. 911s through the '70s ran fine with no issues. Until a tensioner collapsed and you were left stranded with a few bent valves.

In any case, and as I needled them over there, it's all reflected in the market value of the cars. Was offered a relatively low mileage '99 for $16K a couple of weeks ago. Do I want it? It's still around, guy's been offered $13-15K wholesale, and it's a nice car. I would like another commuter, as the smart disappeared from the parking lot at my shop a month ago. So I've looked causally for a C4 Tip, maybe even a cab. Doing the intermediate shaft bearing isn't that big of a deal, if I get one cheap enough. But you have to buy those things cheap. Just like the cast-off 2.7L cars that we hacked to make widebodies and slopenoses 20 years ago.

you sure?

It seems they are trying to convince themselves that the well known issues they do have aren't a big deal

Or, more correctly, in the context of the entire series of 911s...........tell me which one is more troublefree? Bonus points if you have worked in the industry and worked on a large sample of each generation.

I agree with your interpretation of the post.

Anyone that spends any time on the 996 board knows there is a contingent that thinks there is nothing wrong with the 996 engine becasue there are no published figures that prove there's a problem. Instead they claim the reason for 996 low pricing is 993 owners' comments.

In all fairness, 993 owners have been pretty hard on them, but I for one take no joy in seeing another Porsche owner have issues with their car. For that reason, I tend not to be too harsh on the car, at least openly. I know they love their car as much as we do ours. But when you have to brag that you have 20k miles on a new engine with no problems, then there is a problem; especially when I have a SC in my garage with 212k miles and the engine never touched.

Everytime I see one of these "996 engines don't have a problem" posts, I can't help but think:

Ultimately, it's like where the 2.7L cars landed in the mix when they were ~10 years old. "IwannaPorsch" buyer sees a '76 Targa, etc. is cheap relative to the '78 SC (as in half the price) or '73 E circa 1985. So he buys it on price. Then he ends up in my shop for MAJOR engine work. Either the studs had been done, but the case was timecerted improperly; or the thing did actually manage to run 60-70-80K from new. Either way, it was about the value of the car to fix it correctly. 25 years later we have the same thing--997s are double the price of the average 996, and 964/993 are slightly higher.

Now I know the ability to fix the broken M96 engine is finally starting to get into the mainstream. But I'm not sure it's cheap enough to prop the resale market to any extent.
