As to making the non turbo vehicles faster? I didn't feel it.

I have always received the feeling that even when non-enthusiasts see the 993 they know they are looking at something "special" within the Porsche heritage and hierarchy. When the same type of person sees the 997 it's like, "nice sports car.....next".

You can even observe this at a PCA Concours. Where are most of the crowds gathered? Around the older Porsches.

The 993 evokes a sense of history and good memories of great days in the past, much like the sense of smell or taste, or a certain song evokes memories of great days from our pasts.

The first time I washed the 993, it was a sensual experience...Here was a lithe, athletic, gorgeous female body. A 997 is a male and just doesn't affect me that way. A 997 could be my friend, my buddy, but never my lover.

Your lover?!? What you do is your own business, but just for clarification, the holes at the back are for exhaust ONLY

I believe this is much like aftermarket exhaust systems. Every before and after dyno chart I have seen showed that the money was far better spent elsewhere.
Enough people buy them for one reason or another. It was a nice improvement. What else would you rather have done with $350?

I agree. I had a coworker say to me in the parking lot" I'm not a car guy, but THAT is one beautiful car".
People recognize that its special even when they dont care about cars. How cool is that?

How do you know? Chip advertizers claims? I'll always question claims simply because I've worked in the standards measurement industry.

A magazine I subscribe to evaluates stock and aftermarket exhaust systems for a particular make and model which varies. They compare each system to stock and overlay the power and torque curves. Wanna know the results of aftermarket systems? Save your money.

So true.

Not too long ago, I wasn't a car guy, either. I bought Leffingwell's 911 Buyers Guide and just started looking at the pictures. Pre-90's looked cool, but dated. The 964 seemed clunky to me, but when I turned the page to the 993, I thought "now THAT's what I'm talking about!" A few pages later, and the 996 came up...I quickly turned back to the 993.

Who are the major suppliers of chips for our cars?

I'm curious to see what they claim.

"He used a vintage Rolex analogy and said he's looking for the automotive counterpart, something that is solid, well designed, performs well and will retain value well over the long term."

Does that not define the 993? The very fact that after 15 years the 993 is even in this discussion says it all. I think the 997's are great cars, but I don't see them destined for greatness. They look much better looking in and out than the 996, but there is nothing else that sets them apart--and they make so many of them. Unless you intend to track the car, the 993 has all the performance you will ever need.

I am thought seriously about buying a 997 GT3 and would in a heart beat (as I think its the best all around car currently on the market) but for the fact that it would mean getting rid of the 993, and I just can't do that.

For your Rolex friend, the 993 is like a Rolex 5512. We can talk about improvments made in the submariner since then, but any true enthusiast would be thrilled to have the 5512 over what Rolex offers today.

Either way, he can't go wrong.

The 997 GT3 on the cover of the latest Excellence is a really good looking car to me...and I would have that in a heart beat as well....but I also would not get rid of my 993 for it.

To me...one of the biggest differences between the 993 and 997 is the shear size of the 997....and 996 for that matter. Those things are huge compared to the 993. Anybody got a side by side picture??

Also...unfortunately, I think the "smell" of the older (<= 993) cars is forever gone. That smell is what drew to Porsche in the first place...and remains one of my favorite things about the car...and usually the first thing someone mentions when they sit in the car.

Not a good comparison pic because of the angle, but I got used to the new size right away. The weight difference is much more noticeable.
