I'd have to say though, that 997's steering and turn-in are just amazing. makes the 993 feel very antiquated..

I drove both and very easily decided on the 993.

Tell him to give that method a try.

Kind of an example....I did almost all the work on my '95 BMW 525i...but can do almost nothing on my '08 BMW 535i.
How many OBD2 tools were out before recently? I didn't want to be bothered with them when they were new. Over the years, it became necessity. Wasn't until 996's were 7-8 years old before anyone seriously contemplated engine repair. But the parts/tools/knowhow have surfaced. As it's always been. Know how freaked out everyone was when the 944 Turbo came out? Now, it's seen as antiquated. There are too many guys racking up dealership hours fixing these things under/just out of warranty, and that information will filter down to the DIY crowd.

BTW, where do you PUT the chip or is it obvious? Is it as simple as replacing a chip in a socket or is there more to it?
NA = normally aspirated (not turbocharged in this case)

A chip is easy to install once you pull the box out from under the front seat.

Hi

A NA 993 is never going to be as fast as even the most base 997 IMHO. The 997 is a much faster car.

Unless you are threading it down narrow streets in which case the 993 is much faster.

I agree. Just another learning curve to tackle when I can afford to have a 997 along with my 993 in my garage. I'm looking forward to it.

Cheers,

Hi Joe,

While they did address the IMS bearing (the jury is still out if thats a good fix or not), my beef is with the design of these engines and their inherent problems.

Thankfully, Porsche finally realized this and thats why they designed the 9A1. Without a separate crank support girdle, intermediate shaft and having closed-deck cylinders, its a big improvement.

It does as long as the exhaust you put on has turbos hung off of it.

Having owned a Carrera S of both variants, it's amazing how different the two cars are in character despite being only 7 years apart.

Matt, I always wondered how many people really buy into the "chip" thing based on actual before and after dyno measurements.

How much power and torque improvement is there at 2K, 3K, 4K, 5K RPM...not at or above redline like so many of the manufacturer's spec sheets seem to indicate.

I believe this is much like aftermarket exhaust systems. Every before and after dyno chart I have seen showed that the money was far better spent elsewhere.

haha i guess my sarcasm was not loud enough!

anyone who's anyone knows that a chip on a NA engine = HUGE power

At the end of the day they are very different cars and will be purchased by different people. I remember when I bought my tt and all my friends thought i was nuts to buy an "old porsche" when they tootled around town in their gaymens. Different strokes for different folks. I won't be getting rid of mine anytime soon

I chipped a 3 series BMW and a Corvette. I didn't see any difference. I chipped a motorcycle (actually) several and got better throttle response due to the bike(s) not running excessively lean. One bike had a very nasty off trailing throttle response which the chip addressed nicely.

As to making the non turbo vehicles faster? I didn't feel it.
