Top 10 differences between a 993 and 997

Not so sure about this one. There will certainly be many more 997s in the hands of "ordinary" people....people who really dig cars and can afford them....but due to the 997's complexity and required computerized 'tools'...I suspect there will be much fewer people who will be able to actually work on them. Kind of an example....I did almost all the work on my '95 BMW 525i...but can do almost nothing on my '08 BMW 535i.

I don't think anyone has mentioned the sound yet. The watercooled cars just sound different. Porsche tries to replicate the sound in the later cars, but they're not the same.
I had a friend with a 996. His car sounded defanged next to mine. Don't know how the 997 stacks up. Put a 993 and 997 side by side and start each one. OK, the 993 may blow a big cloud of smoke, but not everyone considers that a bad thing.
Don't get me wrong. I think Porsche finally got back on track with the 997 and want to add one to the stable.

Although the 997 has some nice attributes, it's a numb-feeling, insulated vehicle, full of techno-whiz, state-of-the-art stuff to entertain the driver and keep him occupied. The 993 is its own entertainment and keeps its driver occupied by simply driving. The watch analogy is a good one: The 993 ticks (analog), the 997 hums (quartz).

This is something I thought about when I chose my tiptronic. Could never part with mine.
Differences? The 993 is more likely to be get by it's owner for a longer period.

The only newer Porsche I'd have instead of a 993 would be a 997 or a Cayman S. I do love 993s and hope to have another someday, but when the time comes, and the prices of 997s coming down, I may just have to go that route if the right car comes along.

What is he comparing the analog Rolex to? Do they make a Rolex with a digital face, chronometer and alarms? If I were to ever buy a Rolex, I would first do my homework to figure out the differences and which one matches my desires in owning a classic piece of jewelry. I believe that 993 owners choose this car because it says something about them.

#Something: You can't order a new 993. Get 'em while they're (relatively) cheap and (relatively) plentiful. Every one that shows up at LA Dismantlers is one less of the total # alive.

This is an excellent topic with a LOT of good feedback and opinions here.
I'd only add that the ONLY 997 I would have is an '09 or later with the 9A1 engine. I would not own one with the older M96 motor.

Do you feel the same about the later (06-08) cars with the M97 engine (updated/larger IMS bearing)? I haven't seen any stories of these engines failing........yet.
Cheers,
