"Pristine" is listed as a body shop?!?
http://www.yelp.com/biz/pristine-por...ntington-beach

Red flag #1. No wonder he gets itchy with PPIs. I expect that he buys a lot of wrecks. I've never heard of this place. Red flag #2. I agree- I think he specializes in new money OC noobs who just want a flashy "Porsh."

I say Hergie's or bail.

I had heard about this place in the past. I saw a few of his ads when I was looking for my car. http://www.pristinemotorsports.com/

But I looked elsewhere since he seems to sell anything (not just a Porsche specialist) and at pretty hefty prices. To me it all sounded too much like one of those "Fantasy Car" or "Dream Car" places.

edit: looks like he's dropped his prices since 2 years ago. He has this at a reasonable price (at least on the surface): http://www.pristinemotorsports.com/i...d=1996%20993TT

I would even take it further when it comes to a PPI.

If the seller is stating that he/she is certain that the car is perfect and needs no work, I would be willing to pay for the PPI for peace of mind.

But if the car needs a slew of work, then the seller misrepresented the condition of the vehicle which is why I expect them to pay for the PPI up front...if it passes with flying colors, then I would obviously hand over the cash for the cost of the PPI.

And no, I would not want the selling dealer to do the PPI...that is a conflict of interest.

No affiliations, horse in the race, etc. But I have always had mixed feelings about this. If you were selling your prized 993, would you agree to let any buyer take it anywhere to do leakdown testing, test drives, etc.? I dont know anything about these shops and I know in this case they are all probably better than the dealer. But just saying, I have always understood the seller side of this that they want to protect their car as long as they hold the title. Is that what is going on here? No idea...but I guess there is another side to the discussion...

I suppose much of this worry could be mitigated if the seller drove the car to the mechanic of the buyer's choosing (within reason, of course) and then picked it up after the PPI was completed...

I think the seller has a right to reject a buyer's choice of PPI shop if he/she thinks the shop is questionable but then the buyer has the right to walk too. That said, if the buyer suggests a quality, well known shop like Herggie's then there is no reason for the seller to balk.

Oddly enough he suggested that the car could go to Truspeed for a PPI. I had originally contacted Gary at Factory Werks for the PPI based on good feedback here on Rennlist and the close proximity to Pristine's shop. I know that Truspeed has a good rep on the board as well. Just seems strange that he would send me to one of his competitors. He was equally opposed to having his car at the Newport Beach Porsche dealer. He offered that they did not respect his time, which I guess I can understand. As it turns out I may have found another car, but uninterrupted maintenance history including a recent top end, for similar asking price. That Turbo has got me all bothered though... It is the exact color combo (silver/red) that I'm looking for. Too bad I don't have Turbo money.

It's very possible that he simply doesn't get along with Factory Werks or Newport Porsche. You know how these things go, people have a falling out and hold grudges, etc..

fwiw, I've heard good things about Frank Hanrahan. He mostly does Porsche performance modifications, but also regular service. He's very close to Truspeed in the same industrial complex next to the airport in Costa Mesa.

TruSpeed had the car that I was looking at with the leaking steering rack, chunk out of the windshield and paint work. There were some issues since this was a consignment car but the seller bought it from TruSpeed anyhow. I don't know how it worked out as I was out of the loop by then but TruSpeed objected to me using Hergshimers in the first place and never bothered to call me after the fact so in my experience they're just another used car dealer.

When I called Pristine, to make appropriate arrangements, he was immediately defensive about the choice for the PPI. Asked me pointedly how I arrived at my choice, and suggested that I have a PPI done at a place of his choosing. Am i missing something, or are PPI's not necessarily independent?
You need to understand why he is concerned as the choice is yours and you can point out making it your choice protects him from any aftersale discovery of problems with the car.

Hi! Welcome to Rennlist!

This thread is almost six years old. Probably best to start your own thread on the subject matter to solicit experiences. Best of luck with your purchase.
