Default A couple Questions about Paint and Glass Maintenance

Hey guys, I have a couple questions.
1. Is there such a thing as a Waffle weave or other drying towel that doesnt put swirl marks on a black car? (I just bought a Waffle weave drying towel, and used it to dry my car after a wash and it put ALOT of swirls on my car, in the garbage it went.......)

2. Is there a product or way to clean water spots off glass? My rear windshield has it pretty bad. Will it damage the rear defrost?

Thanks in Advance, Paul.

A nice thick microfiber towel won't leave swirls. Just make sure the car is clean. A good coat of wax helps too. My black Audi stayed scratch/swirl free until the first service -- I took it to the dealer and they gave me the "complementary" car wash disservice.

For water mineral deposits, vinegar (diluted 50/50 with water if you wish) should do the trick.

I buy the microfibre towels from Costco (pack of 12 IIRC), I usually use 2 or 3 to dry the car they work great.

Your local auto parts should have them also. For more detailing needs, autogeek.net tends to have all the good stuff (no affil).

Autogeek.net is the best I have found. I am really picky about my paint and use their Shamrock Microfibers for everything. Although discontinued now, their Cobra Deluxe towel is almost as good, and some think better due to it not leaving any fibers behind.

I received as a gift set of Griot's various size/shape microfiber towels and have been very pleased with them. I've found that the best method for drying my car is to use a large waffle weave towel to "pick up" most of the water, then immediately go back over it with a smaller plush towel to completely dry and put a shine on the surface.

As for the windshield spots, if the methods mentioned above don't work, try claying the glass. I've had good success going that route.

Arena Red is a tough color as well - the paint will pick up swirk marks if you just walk by..... I wash the car and actually use my air compressor air at about 60 psi to take most of the water off. Then I wipe down with a high quality microfiber cloth while 'spritzing' the surface with Zaino Z6 gloss enhancer. The Z6 lubes the surface and the microfiber cloth absorbs what little moisture is left on the paint.

As far as the rear window, just treat with Rain-X and the water spots will come right off.

BTW, sometimes you can get water spotting on the paint that is tough to remove - the spots can happen when you get caught in the rain and the sun comes back out hot. Happened to me just a few weeks ago. I guessa combination of the water beaded on the paint, hot sun and maybe some crap in the rain water. It left some circular deposits on the painted flat surfaces. Zaino Z6 after a wash took them right out.

For a black car (Im assuming you mean the car in your avatar) - I find that after a wash I almost always have to spray on a little "speed shine" - griots product - to make the car look great. Even when I dry the car to the best of my ability with microfiber towels - you"ll always find some residue or drips. The speed shine makes the surface free of any swirls, etc. My .02

Here is a trick I learned from the bimmer forum. When you are done washing, remove any spray nozzle from the hose and gently let the water run a laminar sheet of water on the car, starting from the top. As the water runs off it leaves amazingly little water left to dry, even on the glass. Use a microfiber towel, or a good synthetic chamois to finish off. When I first read this, I thought "yeah right." But it does and it is easy.

I like to finish up with detail spray also.

If you want the really best (doesnt mean cheap)...

For towels that wont scratch black paint - you need to use 100% cotton with no tags, edges, etc. There are some great sources/sponsors on this site. I have to admit I also really swear by this source: www.waynestowel.com

For your glass, the absolute best solution is INVISIGLASS used with Sunday newspaper. Nothing works better in my experience.

I'm glad you mentioned this, as I've been getting swirl marks.

For bad water spots on windows I have used 000 or finer steel wool with soap and water. This is a last resort method. Always do a test spot first. But in my experience I have never scratched glass with 000 or finer steel wool. GL
