Used 993 TT Advice
Looking to purchase a 993 TT and would like to know if anyone here has any advice on which year to buy (1996 or 1997), reliability, ease of small modifications, things to look out for, etc. The prices on these cars are quite steep and there is limited inventory so any help here would be great.

1996 and 1997 are identical in terms of specs, but the 97 has a few nice upgrades like a stronger input shaft and some little revisions like a brake booster dampner (which some later 96s have as well). However, they build far fewer 97s and they are therefore a bit more expensive. In my opinion, find the car you like, and don't worry about 96 vs. 97.
Reliability is pretty good. Turbos can have a limited shelf life if not properly treated (overfilled oil, no cooldowns, etc), but if treated well should last well over 100k miles. Engine internals appear robust although valve guides are standard porsche hit or miss.
Small modifications are available, but they aren't cheap nor do they do a hell of a lot. I'd say focus on exhaust for the sound and then spend the money for a good tuning package.
Things to look out for:
good shifting tranny
low leakdown
non-smoking exhaust on start up
no damage to expensive full leather interior.
smooth clutch action
etc.
GET A PPI.
