Smile How to illuminate - the unused US Center Reflector Positions for Marker & Stop light

This posting is to describe how to illuminate the open bulb positions in the center reflector on a 993 for stop and marker lamp illumination.

I am not an engineer, mechanic, electrician or technical writer so use these instructions at your own risk. Also read all the instructions before starting.

Purchase 2 Dorman “84809 Double contact socket – Import”. These are stocked at my local Pep Boys.

Modify the socket:
1) When you trial fit the socket into the back of the panel you will see that a plastic part on the socket obstructs the socket from fitting in. Cut off the obstruction with a mat knife.
2) By trial fit, trim the smaller bayonet pin on each side so it clears the matching notch sides in the lens housing.
3) By trial and error trim the top of both bayonet pins (sides closest to the face of the socket) so they clears the bayonet notches on the lens housing just enough so when the socket is fully inserted it can be turned and locked in.

Identifying socket connections:
4) Install a two filament bulb identical to the existing stop/marker bulb in the corner lamp housings into one of the sockets. With a volt ohm meter measure the ohm values between each and all combinations of the socket pigtail wires. Do this for both sockets because the color code of the wires can not be relied upon.
5) For each socket the wire not used when the highest numeric Ohm value is measured is the common (ground) connection for both filaments.
6) The wire with the lowest ohm value when used in combination with the common wire is connected to the bright or stop filament on the bulb
7) The remaining wire when used in combination with the common wire illuminates the lower brightness marker lamp filament.
Making the connections:
8) Tap into the wires leading to one of the existing stop/marker lamps. The wire on my car for the driver side stop/marker lamp had a red stripe and the marker lamp wire had a very light (not white) grey stripe.
9) Run a length of wire from each of these tap-in points to the same lamp (stop & marker) positions on both of the new lamp sockets.
10) Attach the common wire from both sockets to the brown ground wire already present in the center reflector.
11) Test the turn and stop lights from the driver controls.
12) Solder all connections and insulate them. Tie down and clean up the wire layout as appropriate. Do not use crimp-on type wire connectors. Over time with vibration, heat cycling, moisture and dirt they will fail.

Install notes:
To make for a cleaner install and minimize the number of connections you can remove the contact pins from the sockets, reuse or replace them with an attached home made prewired harness between the two sockets in a daisy chain with enough remaining wire to splice into the existing wiring harness. By doing this you can avoid five connection points between wires that will need to be soldered and insulated.

Unlike the removed socket plugs the new lamp sockets are not water or vapor proof. For this reason it may be advisable to wrap the socket in electrical tape that extends part way up the connection wires to provide some sealing before reassembly.

Hope this helps.
Andy

The above set-up has now been on the car for several years, including two bumper cover replacements. Works great and is reliable.

For my clarification... You're just using the rear foglamp positions for additional dual filament marker/stop lights, right? I would also like to see these illuminated... maybe a small youtube video? OFF/Markers On/Brake On/OFF. Could'ya?

I would not use dual filament bulbs in the unused fog light slots. If you're driving at night with 4 tail lights on it gives other drivers the impression that you are braking. Not safe. I have used single filament bulbs in my fog light sockets for extra brake lights. Here's a photo from my old C4S, my current car has the exact same set up:

Wanting to try and keep this organized I am going to add to this thread. I purchased the 964 center light harness with wire and bulb sockets from ebay and have been researching the connector still attached, 813971944. Its a 3 pin plug with only 2 being used. The plug I have has the male spade inside, so I am wondering if the same plug is on the 993, more than likely, but haven't taken mine off yet (waiting for the Tore LED's to come in and also, I'm lazy). If it is, I see a very factory way of using the empty space in that connector using the existing factory harness to conceal all. Just tossing it out there.

Oh and that plug has 4 O's on it interconnected like, which is interesting in and of itself, along DRN and Germany below.

I went ahead and wired my lights into the brake light. Couldn't load the video clip but here's a still from it. Awesome light when I brake now. Used the LEDs in the marker/brakes and between the LEDs and center aux. lights, there's no way you'll miss me braking. If you do and hurt my car, it won't go over well. Hopefully you won't spend the rest of your life eating your meals through a straw.

Here are the cross Refs to the center light connector part # from the 964 with bulb holders. I love being able to make it totally invisible if possible.

The housing side connector that I have crosses to 813972928 with the corresponding male spade pins 000979104E 1mm wire size & 000979203E 2.5mm wire size.

The presumed car side mating connector for the above crosses to 813972927 with corresponding female connectors 000979135E 1mm wire size & 000979227EA 2.5MM wire size.

I have no idea if the wire size is bare or with insulation. I'll be ordering the 2.5MM config for both sides assuming mine in the car is the same as the one I am looking at.

If anyone has their center light section removed or has that connectors part number would greatly appreciate it, i'll then see if the above cross still works and thus be able to contain the addl brake lights with the existing factory connector and only have to tap into the brake light power on the car side to activate.

964 harness won't work. I installed the extra brake lights on my RSA back in the day and the bulb holders are completely different. The ones on the 993 are VERY shallow, the 964 ones are much deeper.

Son Offfff BEEEEEcccchhhh!!! as he raises his clenched fist in defiance.

Ilko, is the connector info that I detailed above correlate still or are 993 and 964 connectors different? If they are, then I'll edit the above to say "I have no freaking clue" and move on and stuff a glow stick in the bloody thing and call it.

Rob, sorry to say but I have no idea what the numbers you referenced above are, hehe.

I'm just telling you what I know based on my experience fitting these things on both 964s and 993s. A few years back there was someone here claiming certain bulb holders from a Nissan work as well. I have not tried it so I cannot confirm it. Scour Ebay or dismantlers for a used center reflector harness. I was lucky to find a ROW one (4 total bulbs - fogs and reverse lights) last year and cut the bulb holders. Sent 2 to JPP and used the other 2. 14-18 Ga wire works fine to connect it to the tail light.

Hope this helps...
