Question How to remove 993 quarter windows?

I'm looking for real-world experience if you've done this before. I need to replace both of the black-painted trim pieces that run under the rear side windows (quarter windows).

From what I've heard before, the quarter windows are held in exclusively by the rubber gasket. To remove, one peels a section of the rubber up on the inside and starts pushing outwards while a helper stands by. To re-install, a length of twine is wrapped around the lip of the rubber and the window is set into place while the twine is pulled from the inside.

Does this sound correct?

Andreas--years ago (pre-993 possibly) you had a couple of allen headed fasteners on the inside area of the leading edge of the windows. By the 993 days I would speculate that they are held in exclusively with the rubber seal.

Thank you sir. That's my feeling at the moment.

correct.
to pop out, I found it easier to un-lip the rubber seal from the low middle and top middle, and push the seal
round the back small corner and then work it out from the pillar.
to put back, easiest was to start at the back small fin, do the bottom, up the pillar, and the top until the fin.
I think you are after the sealing strap underneath the trim pieces. This thing goes brittle in no time.
I will have to find some other water resistant material than the original to replace mine.

Well, I took out the driver's side quarter window today. Not too bad. First, I removed the interior trim piece that sits just under the window. This gives access to the lower portion of the gasket.

With a friend stationed outside to catch the glass, I started jimmying the gasket up & out. It starts to make sense once you start.
With the window and its gasket removed, I cleaned up the otherwise-hidden portions of the body. I'll need to get the correct sealant/putty/whatever that goes under the black trim piece, so I have some time to worry about the following: The black trim piece wore through the Polar Silver paint in a few places, exposing the primer underneath. I have no idea how I'll tackle this new-found joy, but I refuse to just slap everything back together knowing about these marks....

Thoughts?

Any thoughts on how best to touch up these marks? Are there competent air-brush repair guys who could handle this, local to the actual marks? I'd rather not monkey around with touch-up paint and then have my 'repair' visible once the new black trim is fastened in place.

Hi there. In my short life I have taken out and put back many, many rubber set windows. Looks like you've got it out easy enough. Now when you put it back in the car, I have found a nice piece of quarter round rope works best. Don't forget to lube the rubber seal prior roping it back in. Failure to lube can cause tearing of the rubber gasket. I usually use some glass cleaner to lube it but find silicone spray works best for tight fits(just a mess to clean up).Hope this tiny bit of info helps.GL

Thanks!!

I wouldn't bother with the quarter (1/4" dia) rope for re-install, just use your favorite string of "thunder beads"...that window will just explode into that space.

The most shocking part of this thread wasn't that you were removing adhesive bonded body panels to clean the hidden surface underneath...but that you actuall claim to have a "friend" to catch the glass.

So..does that make you the "pitcher" in that relationship?

I don't know, actually...I'm getting a little queezy when I just re-read it. Probably get a complete "How-to" by typing www.insert perverted fettish here.com in his search engine
