Default Thinking I will pull the trigger on the Sony

This one has iPod and Satellite capability. Sat is a must have for me. iPod I can live without. Anyone have a Sony in their 993? Hit or Skip?

Isn't there anything you can do besides taking out the factory head unit?

I mean I've seen the portable Sirius Sat Players...a friend of mine has one in his IS350. It's awesome and you can remove the actual unit and take it places to play. They sell a boombox looking player/docking station.

That would be my first choice. Just my $0.02...even though I don't own a 993...

Thanks for the input. I don't have a factory head unit in the car now...it's an older Alpine the original owner put in. It sounds like crap frankly and I really NEED satellite.

There probably are options to put in just Sat. with a factory head unit if you don't mind the external control being on the dash or windshield.

Never liked that part of Sat. myself however...prefer it built in.

TRM,
I am local to you, I just installed a Blaupunkt head unit and I deliberated on this for some time. I decided not to go with SAT ready head, as I have the portable. I connect to the Aux input. If you want to see what I have, PM me and we can meet up.

I have the previous generation of this unit. It works fine and I can't find anything wrong with it except that the display is father glossy. It is very difficult to read during the day with all the glare. The pic makes it look kinda grey, but is actually black and more or less fits with the interior look - not much out there new that does. I also don't dig the blue illumination. I don't use satellite, so can be no help there.

IMHO if you can deal with that look then almost anything will do. It boils down to personal choice on look and feel of your car, and your being happy with what you have.

So if you go that way, go with the sound and features that you need.

Default Head unit

Check out the Kenwood KDC X794. It has a ton of features including satellite and iPod, and it looks like it may blend in with your 993 interior pretty well. To me, current head units have become way too disco and look out of place. I'm writing this from an iPad and couldn't cut and paste the site or photo easily, sorry.

Nick

I would personally prefer to go with a CDR-220, but until I heard recent rumours that they started doing them again, you couldn't get the modified faceplate that would work with the location on the 911-993 interiors.

Here are a couple pics of the Kenwood.

I have a CR-220 (cassette) that I got for $35. You can get a CDR-220 (CD) for $150-200 and you can hook up an iPod or Sat radio with an Aux connector ($20 from Becker) It's a factory radio that looks like it belongs in the car unlike the new aftermarket units that are a bunch of glossy, glowing, animated distractions

Regarding the faceplate, sure you can't see **** on a bright day. But once you set up your preferences in the garage, there's no need to mess with it on the road anyway if you have connected an iPod or Sat radio. All it shows on the screen is "AUX." So modifying the display for for an additional $100+ or whatever fee Becker charges is useless IMO.

So yeah, a +1 for a CR/CDR-220

Syzygy, Not clear on what you are referring too? The Kenwood you posted pics of or the CDR-220?

He's referring to the faceplate on the CDR-220, which apparently has only recently become available through Becker again. The fact is even with the correct faceplate for the 993 I still can't read it with polarized sunglasses but for those who want as close to stock as possible it's probably the best compromise IMHO. If you don't care there is lots of better technology out there, after all the CDR-220 is more than 10 years old, a dinosauer in the tech world.

The previous poster, Nick, commented that he couldn't post pics of the Kenwood, so I did. Just trying to be a bit helpful. Didn't mean to confuse anyone...
