Another DME Relay bites the dust!
Pulled up to a traffic light yesterday in the C2S and it just died! Starter worked but no fire. Thanks to the knowledge gained here, I simply turned on my emergency blinkers, popped the bonnet, retrieved my spare DME relay, replaced same, got back in the car and drove away. Elapsed time: About 2 minutes. To borrow a quote from one of our member's, "Is this place great or what?"
If you're driving around without a spare DME relay (p/n 993.615.227.00 or equivalent), you're simply tempting fate.

That makes 2 (bit the dust). i was at VIR this past w/e when a previous DACH customer called me out of the blue asking what I thought about what happened to his car (almost the same as what happened to you). I suggested he replace the DME relay and we ended the conversation. The next day I got a message. He sent his GF to the local dealer, picked up a new relay, a viola, fire again! I had one for the longest time riding in my door pocket, I hadn't seen it recently, should probably locate it
Glad to hear your problem was a simple one too.

I wonder if the DME can have intermittent failures?
On occasion my car will simply crank and crank, not even trying to fire.
Turn the key off, try again and it lites right off.
Doubt if my local dealer stocks them.....where is a good place to pick one up for a late '95 on line?

In all probability, it's the relay that's intermittent, not the DME. BTW, has NE1 ever had one fail while on track? Man, that would really get my attention!

I think that these things fail at a higher rate in the summer due to the heat.
I replaced mine last year due to non-start (in my garage). Bought another back up too!

P/N 993.615.227.00 is the combination fuel pump and DME relay. Located in the front electrical box on the passenger side under the carpet near the firewall. It is the closest tall relay you see as you remove the cover. If the relay fails to do its job, you're going nowhere until it's replaced (unless you bridge across the contacts with a wire jumper (risky business, since the fuel pump will run as soon as you use the jumper). There are OEM and aftermarket suppliers of these, ranging in price from $15 to $85 although they all seem to fail, regardless of how much you pay.

Thanks Trackrat.
I looked it up at Autohaus to see what it looks like.
I had mistakenly refered to it as the DME, but now I understand it is the fuel pump relay.
I will order one or two, as I think that is my current problem with occasional hard starting.

Autohausaz lists 2 versions of the DME relay... same price more or less. Which one is preferred?

Don't know about Autohausaz's numbering system or if these are OEM parts, but you don't want the 944 part, it had intermittent problems and was replaced with P/N 993.615.227.00. I keep a spare in both cars tucked inside the fuse box, resting on their side, ready to go. It's one of the first things I picked up when I bought the '95 two years ago ...
