The "ideal" set of cars

I don't know if this would be my "ideal" list, i.e. money is not a factor (nor is space to park them), but here's my plausible list. I'm 2/3 of the way there:
My C4S, for when I wanna drive a sporty car. Done.
My '64 Bird drop-top, for those summertime Sunday drives up the coast. Done.
Maybe a Mercedes ML63/Cayenne Turbo/BMW X5 M or other comparable SUV as great urban assault daily driver. Fast, can load tons of stuff into it, and has good protection against the crappy roads and mindless texters who almost hit me everyday.

Hal M, we're on the same page.
His - MDX
Mine - Prius
His - 98 993S coupe
Mine - 97 993 coupe
Mine - 89 911 Carrera 3.2 coupe
Having a commuter car with a hatchback (Prius) and an SUV (MDX) gives us a lot of flexibility.
The next Porsche we buy will be an early 911 or 912. My dad used to have a 359 super 90 cab and while I loved that car to death, I'd choose a 911/912 over it for general driveability. If I ever reach the stage of vast garage space and unlimited financial resources, sure, I'd love a 356, but until then I need all my cars to be solid drivers.

My stable looks like this:
1962 Alfa Romeo Giulia Spider - convertible, classic car
1995 993 Coupé - sports car
2003 BMW 325 ti compact - four seater, hatchback, daily driver
I think I have all bases covered. I have no need for 4wd, pickup truck etc. as I live in the city and don't need a towing vehicle.
My experience with the Alfa: lots of positive attention (I hardly get any in the Porsche), but it is slow in today's traffic and I don't care much for driving it on the Autobahn. I just don' t feel safe in it driving faster than 80 km/h or so. And i don't want to drive it in even the slightest rain for fear of rust and because the roof is not really watertight. You need to determine whether driving anything that old is your cup of tea. If it is, a 356 is one of the more expensive options. My Alfa was a contemporary competitor of the 356 but can be had for far less money today. The same applies e.g. for an MGA.

Well,
I have a 95 993 and a 62 356.
I also have a 2008 Jeep commander and a Audi A4 S-line Titanium (just bought it)
My 356 is not finished restoration yet, but here are my thoughts:
The 356 is really small and not a performance car by todays standard. I love the car, and if pushed, I would sell the 993 first.
Many factors, but the 356 should continue to go up in value. The 993 is stable in value, but for me, my C2 has no real potential to increase in value in the near future.
It really comes down to what you want the car for...my 356 is going to be used for a few special times a year and then given to my son when I am too old to drive it (hopefully around 110 years old!)
Also, of note, I am 33 years old and I have a weird nostalgia for old things. If given the choice I will typically always pick older handmade things over new plastic crap. My wife thinks I am nutz. The only exception would be things designed by APPLE

Really depends on what kind of 356 you talkin' about. Our 1955 356 "Bad Max" would chase and catch Corvettes. One of the fastest Porsches we've owned......

PM&N, I can't be the only one who doesn't quite understand what your goals are, can I? What would you accomplish w/ the 356? What don't you like about the 993? What do you need a DD for? Does the BMW not fill the need?
