Default Thule roof rack on

I had most of the pieces needed, except for the 300 gutter mounts. I got those slightly used off ebay. The gutter mounts are the standard 6" tall version. there is actually a 3" difference between the rail tops front to back-let alone the rear most rail being on a pretty good angle, due naturally to the slope of the roof. Thule does make taller Gutter mount's, I think I remember 9', and maybe even a 12" one. Having the bikes mount "level" isn't that much of a concern for me, mounting securely is.

The wheel holders work perfectly on the outboard of the gutter mount. There should be just enough room under the bonnet for two gear bags, so I'm good to go. The rack can be easily taken on and off, so I won't have to worry about wacking my head on the rail ends multiple times a day.

Personally, I think it looks cool. Should whistle pretty damn good going down the road too. Theoretically, were hitting the trails tomorrow. The forcast is for more heavy thunderstorms tomorrow morning, so it might be an afternoon road or cross ride instead. Doesn't the orange Salsa crosser look so lonely in the rear shot...what a fun bike, it always wants to play.

more mods coming next week...

That's the nice thing about rain gutters; they provide for easy, and secure, roof mounts.

My brother once did a 125 mph run in our dad's '73 Mercedes 280 SE 4.5, with skis up top; no problem.

I dig the roof rack. I keep wanting to do an old school road trip with all the stuff up there...

Reminds me of a 120+ mph blast along a peninsula north of Reykjavik, Iceland in my '91 Escort GT - with skis and two mountain bikes on top!

That was in 1993 and I left the country without shackles on...

without shackles...aow
And I think it would have been the hoosegow for my brother, if the RCMP had caught him. He was trying to get from Kimberley B.C. to Banff, in one hour, for some youthful reason.

Thinking about roofrack options myself. What's the distance the front and back towers?

measures 27 1/2" center to center of the towers. Thule 300 gutter mounts-not sure the Yakima number, as I have always had Thule stuff.

I went to the extreme with the towers, to simply get less bike tray hanging unsupported. I believe Thule makes some sort of thing a majig for short roofline vehicles, I think I remember seeing it on a Civic coupe once upon a time.

The bikes mount very secure on there, it's good to go. I have the car loaded up right now-gear bag, hydration pack, pump, etc...in the front bonnet. I have a destination race thru unimproved service roads in the Adirondacks tomorrow. Nothing like hitting 30+ mph on a skinny tire'd cyclocross bike on rocks and sand to know your alive.

I will be taking the rack off after this weekend. It wil be a simple re-install whenever I need to haul a bike again. And as cool as I think the rack looks on the car...wow do all my friends and co workers HATE it.

Perhaps they would find it more acceptable if you had a Honda or Toyota and blended right in with them

If we all did what our friends and co-workers wanted us to do...we wouldn't be driving 993's

Good luck and keep those bike wheels planted on the trail this weekend!

Good to see another join the roof-rack-on-993 club. But I kinda knew that would be a given for you. I just replaced the bike mounts with something newer from Yakima. Yeah the bikes stand up, but at freeway speed it doesn't matter. Karen's always had the standup mount anyway. And coming back from Phoenix in April, hitting about a 40mph headwind through Palm Springs, it was like going 120+ I suppose. 17mpg average for that whole trip...........

Mine will be back on for next weekend. Stopping in at the US Open at Pebble Beach Friday, but then down Hwy 1 for the rest of the weekend, taking in Hearst Castle, etc. with some time for leisurely riding.
