Default paint or powder coat?

When I bought my car I was told the rims were recently refinished. They are indeed in near flawless shape.

How can I tell if they are painted or powder coated and is powder coating preferred? I know it is for many things but not sure about wheels.

Can aluminum even be powder coated?

ETA: Yes, yes it can be.

Chuck,

The standard refinishing techniques are painting. That's certainly what you have.

Powdercoat is typically applied electrostatically, then baked in an oven where the powder fuses together to a hard glass like finish. Aluminum can be powdercoated but the powder is applied like a paint and then baked. Your wheels are painted and clearcoated.
