Default First post for new 993 owner

I purchased a 1995 Varioram engined 993 C4 in metallic black a couple of months ago.

I have been the owner of a 964 since 2001 but am currently in the process of an extensive rebuild project on the car which has left me without the porker for yet another summer.

Feeling a little left out after a breakfast club meeting at Goodwood one Sunday, I happened to be browsing Pistonheads for the first time in a couple of months and chanced across what must have been the cheapest 993 I have ever seen here in the UK, (that wasn't in pieces anyway!)

It had a lot of miles at 178,000 but I'm pretty handy with a spanner from my time with the 964 and at the price it was up for, it was just too tempting to ignore for what is a weekend car that will see relatively few miles from hereon in.

I phoned the advertiser, agreed a price and duly had the car looked over by a local specialist who advised on a number of relatively minor issues. Certainly nothing that was going to change my plans and more importantly, no signs of any major collisions.

I duly organised payment for the car and went to see it for the first time and pick it up from the owner.

The overall impression of the car was excellent. It had recently had a window out respray as well as the seats being re-colonised, a new gearshift gaiter installed and the carpets steam cleaned. In a nutshell the car looked fabulous inside and out with hard backed sports seats and a marble grey and black interior.

It was a little sluggish on first start as it had been sitting in a garage for some time and the battery was a little run down but it was loud and smooth ticking over.

Needless to say, I had some great fun on the two hour drive home. Being in a 911 again was utterly exhilarating. The 993 is a magnificent car and my favourite model both past and present.

Predictably, by the time I got the car home I already had a long list of things I wanted to do on the car and for the last couple of months I have been doing just that. I will elaborate on future posts, but in the meantime, find a few shoddy pictures taken the morning after I picked the the car up.

Thanks for the kind words guys and Bart, that is a spectacular shot of the Turbo.

My car came with a Cargraphic N GT exhaust. I didn't realise the exhaust wasn't stock until I came to swap the tips with some standard ovals I bought on ebay and found they were far too short. On closer inspection it turns out one of the previous owners had gone to the expense of installing the Cargraphic system.

At a later stage I will replace the tips but for now they have kind of grown on me.

MagDaddy, here is a better shot of the rear:

Very nice - I think I saw the car advertised. Was it from Cheshire and had the refurb inside by Gabbatt & Brown? Few guys on 911UK have high miler 993 and don't report any major problems. Looks to have had some of the main issues sorted. What about suspension?

I don't think this was the car from Cheshire. the owner was from Milton Keynes and it doesn't look like it has had any significant refurb work inside. The seats have been given a going over with some Dynamix by the owner and he also replaced the gearshift. other than that the interior looks original.

Front shocks were replaced about 12k ago from looking at the history but it is still Monroes all round. The rears are not leaking and look quite tidy which would suggest to me that these too have been swapped out at some point in the reasonably near past. I will be replacing the current setup with some Bilstein HD's and some Cargraphic lowering springs I picked up just recently

I swapped the wheels for some replica 993 RS items I originally bought for my 964 from Type 911 a few years ago and also took the opportunity to rebuild all the calipers and have the discs skimmed in anticipation of an uninterrupted summer of 993 lurve.

The car had been storage for some time and the brakes and discs were needing some attention. It took several weekends of effort stripping the calipers, having them powder coated and rebuilding them but I was pleased with the results. Many pipe unions were rusted solid and way beyond redemption which required splicing in new pipe in several areas. it was worth it though:

Congrats on a nice looking car. You haven't wasted anytime with the wheels! It's really nice to see cars with higher miles still being used as intended. Bring on 200,000 miles!

LOVE hearing the high mileage stories! Mine's at 102k miles and I'd love for her to eventually roll 200k with me at the helm! My prior '86 had 175k when I purchased her w/o ANY engine work! Can't believe I ever let her go...

Drove the car today to run some errands....accelerating onto the freeway and hitting off-ramps at good speeds put that "same old" smile on my face! LOVE this car!

Congrats on the purchase. Now that you've acquired the 993, I somehow, see the 964 rebuild taking a little longer than originally planned...
