Default O/T: CA Smog Test for title transfer

Hi,

I have a question on smog tests. Here is CA the seller is responsible to deliver the buyer a passing smog certificate for registration purposes. We just passed smog in April when we renewed registration for the car. Will that smog test and it's print-out be good for title transfer now? Or we need to do yet another one?

Thanks for the education as always.

Yes. I believe it's good for 90 days (you can verify on the DMV website). What are you selling?

I believe a smog cert. can be transferred for 90 days. You should be good to go if you sell before July

You will need the certification number off the printed results from the smog check for the title transfer. As others have stated, it's good for 90 days.

When I bought my car in May of this year the previous owner completed the SMOG and I was able to transfer the title without any problems. I just got a DMW registration renewal notice for early next year, and it states that I need to SMOG the car again. I thought I was good for 2 years. Is that a mistake?

Probably not as I've had this happen to me. I think DMV has these on a cycle in their computer and unless the smog done at the time of the sale was within a few months of the registration renewal you're on the hook again.

typically the seller is responsible, and most buyers will demand it, but if you both mutually agree, the car MAY be transferred, but the seller still needs to have it smogged (if staying in CA) before it can be registered.

I bought my 911SC without a smog cert, the seller didn't want to be bothered with it, and I knew the history of the car (common mechanic) and he knocked $500 off. but that is atypical.
smog cert is only good for 90 days when transferring title. if the title is the same, it is done every 2 years in CA.
