I ordered this tool from amazon for $4.95 plus shipping:
1/2 In Dr Jumbo Crowfoot Wrench - 27mm
link:

I'd like to grind the tool down beforehand, so it is ready when I need it.
Does anyone know offhand what thickness it needs to be?

The thickness you want is around 7 mm. Good luck getting a 1/2 drive crows foot in there. I tried it and found out it was too big. The 3/8 in drive crows foot may be better in this case.

+ 1 on using a 3/8 drive. If you get the Crows Foot in Inches you will need a 1 1/16 width or a 1" and a grinder. I also found that a 10" riser was about perfect to turn the SAI valve. Good Luck

No, the whole thing is just too big to get in there, especially where the 1/2" attachment hole is. Mine was too long. I checked out your link and it looks similar.
Since the method using a 1/2" crows foot was a dead end for me, I came up with a slightly different method to get that "wonderful" part out. I posted the method a week or so ago. It worked well for me and was fairly easy. I think adding heat helps a lot. I can't seem to get the link to the post. Do a search on "SAI check valve removal".
