There's a reason for that.

I was thinking Jag, but yeah, don't do it.

Wow, that seems steep, but I need to remind myself that that's probably no more than what mine cost new. I imagine that Porsche must get 40% of a car's profit from the elaborate factory options scheme.

So far, no cardboard showing through the shift pattern. P.S. Old, random mats here, but useful in showing how hard it is to match greys. Now I have black Lloyds.

Default I bought the carbon fiber steering wheel from "Gemballa"...........

...a few years ago via an ebay auction. The rest of the CF is from Porsche's Tequipment catalog (Back when the 993 was in production).

I've got what I'm guessing is the Tequipment rootwood shifter and e-brake, like in 911Jeff's photos (but obviously with wood instead of CF). While they're nice enough, I'm not sure I would've picked them out if I was the one optioning the car.

Since any thoughts of keeping my car as originally optioned went out the window when I dropped the rear wiper, I suppose selling these off (or trading) is an option if somebody really had an unsatisfied rootwood jones.

Not sure what the going rate for used rootwood ***** is though, any suggestions?

- Dave

BTW, "Unsatisfied Rootwood Jones" would be a GREAT name for a rock band. You're welcome.

Default Just for the record, I did try the rootwood route...

before I settled in with the carbon fiber. I thought it was nice, but I didn't think it fit in with my 993 interior as well as the carbon fiber. I moved the root wood wheel to the Boxster I had at the time.....
I have a newer boxter now, and I went carbon fiber on it (steerring wheel, door sills and door pocket lids).

Great thread. I'm more of an aluminum shifter or leather shifter guy but I can see why some people like the Rootwood, and I'm sure it looks better in person than these pics. :

Love that carbon fiber wheel, too. Very techie looking.

Cheers,

I've got the rootwood shiftknob in my 97 and love it for it's functionality. Leather = sweaty hands and a "gummy" feel after an aggressive drive or on hot days. The wood shiftknob, like the more expensive CF shiftknob, has a laminate-like coating and doesn't get that "gummy" feel to it IMHO.

Default Here's a root wood wheel...

It will need a dye job (unless you have a red interior...).

I was lucky to have a rootwood shifter on mine when I bought her many years ago. I then lucked into a rootwood e-brake handle. Love the look, especially in cashmere ...really "warms" up the interior nicely!

The price seems high but consider that I went to the dealer and he could not get them, not even order them from Porsche in Germany. I even called LA Dismantlers (out of desperation)and they did not have them. I wanted the shifter and Hbrake in root wood badly. My 993 is a toy that I keep in the garage with A/C, only a sunday, when there is good wather drive, it has 40K mi. With toys you spend more than you would normally.

Shoot, no need to justify spending around here. We've all gulped the Kool Aid and jumped off the deep end long ago! Glad you found what you needed.

My car came with both the shifter and brake handle in rootwood. It's a great option IMHO especially for the shift on light colored interiors as the leather on the **** tends to get pretty grubby over time. According to my original sticker here's what they cost new (in 1996 dollars) if it makes anyone feel better:

Rootwood shift lever **** $357.00
Parking Brake lever rootwood $382.00
