Default WTB: catalytic converter for '95

I need a catalytic converter for my '95 C2 coupe w/90K miles on the clock. Something came loose in the one I have, it rattles especially when shifting from reverse to first and vice versa, or engaging dis-engaging the clutch. If anyone has one from a track car for instance? Thank you.

One of my neighbors has one that came out of his C2S after 21k miles - I'm happy to go talk to him later today. What would you offer him? What's a fair price for one of these?

C2S is not a 95, which is different.

Most likely the rattle is caused by the internal ceramic coating breaking apart. If you are unable to acquire another converter at a decent price, you can remove yours, turn it up on it's end, shake and tap it against a hard suface. Repeat for other side. All loose pieces causing the rattling noise will fall out. Reinstall and you should be good to go. Yep, been down that road.

MY '95 (OBD I) has a different cat.Since the C2S was not made in '95, it has the OBD II cat (more o2 sensors.)

That's not the prob, though. They haver a different shaped heat exchanger to cat connection - Bischoff vs. Gillette.

the key word is "TAP". I tried this when I was in college and the loose pieces would not come out. Tapping harder created more pieces. IIRC, I ended up "beating" the cc against a tree and that got ALL the pieces out.

I assume you checked the heat shields; there is one on each muffler and one at the cat. If they are loose they will rattle also.

A few months ago my car passed CA smog by only 2ppm in the hydrocarbon category. Some would say a weak cat can contribute to this since hight HC's are a product of unburned something made of carbon. Some say it's a sure sign of bad valve guides. I prefer to try the less expensive methods first. I have no idea how many miles a cat is good for, but of course I need one for a '95, how much are you looking to get for yours?
Thank you, John in San Diego

Thanks, but I need one for an OBDI car with only one O2 sensor. I know one is triangular shaped and one is oval, I don't know which is the '95 style.

No that it really makes any difference in a request for a part from a private party, but installation of a used cat is illegal in CA for a couple of years now.

I have one, but I was "saving" it in case my car could not pass CA smog with the DACH sport cats.. 95 OBD1

We could work something out.. but.. First, I'd go over your heat shields.. there are some odd fittings on the back side of the bumper cover closest to the cat.. sometimes those can rattle..

Get under your car and tap with a mallet or your fist on everything..

Hi There

Ditto the heat shields. I think it is far more likely to be something like that. I had my standard cat cut open and some 100 cell sports cats inserted, and looking at what came out and the construction I think its pretty unlikely that you would get a loud rattle. My cats had done 185k and were still working.

I think the clue is that it makes the noise when you are engaging the clutch or changing gear, i.e. when the engine might be moving on the mounts. Perhaps the shield is contacting something.
