Recommended smog in SF Bay Area?
Need to get smogged. Read before that they have updated the sw so that we can go to a regular smog shop. Any recommendations in the Danville or Peninsula area?
Thanks everyone!

Hey Surj,
I believe that you might live in Danville and if so I took my car the the smog place at the corner of Front st. and Diablo rd. I can't remeber the name though if you watch the mailers they are always running a coupon special.
My car passed no problem. The motor is pretty much stock except for 100cell cats. Which did not raise any red flags.
Good luck

SF qualifies as bay area but may be too far away to be of interest. Went to Smog Haus at 854 Ellis today. All passed except functional check (readiness indicators) and was sent to the referee at Skyline College just like two years ago. The ref signed off on it and I'm good for another two years. The guy at Smog Haus said he was surprised the state hasn't waived '96 - '97's as it's a known issue. He does a lot of Porsches and it's classic. Other makes have received waivers for certain years for similar issues but they won't budge on 911's.

I just had my car smogged last weekend and would be happy to assist if you have any problems with the sensors resulting from a battery disconnect or infrequent driving. In any case, I can recommend I.S.T. Automotive on Stevens Creek in San Jose (408-298-5885). I have no affiliation with them, but I have taken my 95 C4 there and most recently my 97 Turbo. No issues at all passing the C4, which was my daily driver, and once I ran the drive cycle (courtesy of Rennlist contributors), no problem with my (garage queen) Turbo either.

Bob (owner) of Quality Tune @ 150th/E14th in San Leandro has been doing mine for 20+ years. Before that, his cousin owned the shop and still has a 3.0 930. Don't expect "favors", but do expect he knows which end the engine is in a 911!
I even bought one of his old BAR 90 machines, though I never use the thing since the pre-'76 cars are smog free now and the newer RWD ones have to go on the dyno.........

California smog referee info
Here's a link that is much official info as I can find out about the referee stations.
http://smogcheck.ca.gov/80_BARResour...e_Centers.html
They are usually located at a junior college campus that has an automotive technology department. you can't go there directly. You have to go to a regular smog station first and pay the regular fee. In my case I passed emissions but failed when it came to the readiness tallys' on the OBD computer readout. They then give you the paperwork and you make an appointment with the BAR
(California Department of Consumer Affairs, Bureau of Automotive Repair), 800 622 7733, at the ref station closest to you. You pay a fee of $8.25 upon completion of inspection. The ref station then sends the certification directly to the DMV and your registration shows up in a couple of weeks. It was really pretty simple. Door to door the whole thing took about an hour. I enjoyed the drive down the peninsula to the ref (any excuse to drive). There is an instructor in charge and one or more students are around to help with the certification. The students get visibly more interested when something like a 993 comes through the door.
