Thank you for the post. The road closures are endless. There was just another rockslide yesterday on 441 by Newfound Gap in the Great Smoky Mountain NP.

That was OUR road, dammit!

Maybe while they're at it, they can remove any pesky curbs, eh, Jim?

Where was that Dave? Made it through this morning (8:30'ish)on our way home with no issues or delays. There were road crews doing something tree oriented, but it was grinding (mulching). On a side note, it was so fogged in up there this morning, I could hardly see the end of my truck's hood, certainly no view like we all got before our drive .
As soon as we got on the back side, it was like another world, completely clear and sunny.

I cut my mountain driving teeth on those roads in the 80's! Use to park at hogpen gap and hike on the steep rockface looking out at the valley. Then, to cleveland to eat at Lagniappe restaraunt.
Beuatiful up there...hope it opens soon.

Ask Sergio. He liked that road.

My nemesis was Unicoi Gap, specifically the 4" recessed drains

Yes, that's my favorite road. Hmm...the article says that...

"It crests at Hogpen Gap, with an elevation of about 3,800 feet, making it one of Georgia's highest roadways.

The worst damage is at the (White/Union) county line, right at the top of the mountain. But it's damaged all along those seven miles, because of the asphalt expanding and contracting. The cold, the rain and the ice have all been conspiring against us this winter.”

I bet that 4 wheel drifting and power sildes on the frozen asphalt with fat-beefy tires during our New Years run didn't help much either.

Hopefully they can fix Jim's drains while they are at it and we should be set!

The news just stated tonight at 6:00 that they routed 2 way traffic through a parking lot (turn out?) and that it will take a few weeks to clear the slide. I have no idea other what they announced. Maybe it was Newfound Gap Road and not 441 but I'm just guessing. Glad you had a safe drive back to Wilmington. Hopefully we'll meet up again some day.
