Yesterday the car developed a rattling noise. The sound of it is of two metal objects banging against each other - similar to a penny in a can. At high speed the banging frequency is so high that it almost sounds like there is a broken exhaust seal. Initially I thought I was suffering from a collapsed lifter, but the symptoms are different.

The noise is only there when the car is in gear. The faster the car drives the more frequent the sound is, it is not related to engine RPM. It doesn't affect any particular gear. There is no loss of power either. The sound disappears during engine braking.

Based on those symptoms i think it's clutch related. The clutch generally bites pretty high also, although I've been told that's typical of 993s.

Any ideas what this might be?

It sounds like there might be something loose in the gearbox. Does the clutch engage in a normal way, and is there any unusual sound when it engages? If not, I'd stop driving it and take it to a transmission shop. If there is something rattling around in there, you don't want to make matters worse. If there is, then you probably need a new clutch or flywheel anyway.

Chuck, the clutch engages fine and there is no unusual sound at all.. Clutch and flywheel have around 40K miles on them. Viper Bob put them on and I was hoping to get more mileage out of them

I had a maybe similar noise when I dropped the clutch in my VW super beetle with a Type 4 engine intalled during break in period. I only had a 44 hp clutch at the time and I figured it's OK to drive until I get the bigger one. I couldn't help it but wanted to put the power down just once. Something let go and the rattle sounded bad. I found out after I split the engine from the tranny that I had sheared a couple of rivets in the pressure plate that holds the spring. The clutch plate also broke one of the dampening springs into half. They fell out and made a horrible noise. I was still able to drive home though, with lot's of slippage.
Maybe it'll help you to ID it.

I'd need to hear it for myself and do some tests with the clutch pedal, but such rattles may be broken springs in the clutch hub.

I'd also look very closely at the pressure plate straps and diaphram springs.

Axle drive/CV joint bolt coming loose?

You know, I installed a new rear axle over the winter and haven't driven the car at all since then... Yesterday was literally the first time I took the car out since the install.

I just looked at the bolts and everything looked pretty good. Anything in particular I should look at?

Could it be that the axle I got is defective and has a bad bearing inside?

If the bolts aren't loose then it's not the bolt.

Could be bad axle? Have you tried disconnection the axles and see if it still make the same noise?

BTW this was a used axle I got from Steve Beddor back in December. I never got around to driving the car after installing it.
