Default Not many of us here tow, BUT........

It's tires. Always tires. Now, the trailer is a huge, heavy stacker, but there's still always a tire problem. This was towing back from Laguna last Tuesday night. Luckily I had just stopped to catch up to "the gang" for dinner.

Looks like hardly any wear on that tire, Manufacturers defect?

Glad it didn't cause an accident for you...

They're 4 years old. Trailer hasn't gone much beyond Bay Area-Thunderhill-Laguna since '05. And a LOT of local "tows" to move vending machines.

Oh, and if someone looking wasn't familiar with the "rig"...............it's about as big/heavy a tag trailer as you'll get.

Do you double stack the radical only or will another 911 fit above?

Surprised to see a twin axle stacker. All of the others I have seen are triple.

Trailer tires-expensive pieces of crap. On my boat trailer, pulling my boat from the water, one of the tires split, replaced with spare (6 yrs old but never used) which immediatlely split once it had the full weight of the boat. Thankfully the hole pattern was the same as my ford truck and I used that. PITA

I've had towing excitement over the years. Which is why I just shake my head when I hear of the guys who brag "I tow 90mph"...............

It was built originally for two Radicals, the guys who initially owned NCRC out here in CA. It's fine for up to 3K of production car on the bottom and one sports racer on top. Best is the Radical on top, and the 910 below!

6K axles. I've never towed with a triple, opinions vary. TPD out here puts triples on everything, but they're using smaller axles.

10 ply truck tires for this unit. The fallacy of trailering is thinking the tires being so loaded will last to through their tread life. 4 years is about as much as I feel comfortable with.

Do you think that there is a quality control issue with these no name trailer tire manufacturers?

Update: seems a screw backed off that holds the "fender" and was digging into the front left tire. That one is gouged, but hasn't blown. The rear left, while I can't really tell how it punctured, it has more of a split in it, might have picked up another screw that backed out.

Here's a little jewel for you Ken

20 minutes outside of Road Atlanta last w/e. This little badboy let go at 65 mph in the fast lane passing other "slower" vehicles. Needsless to say, 4 new trailer tires (Carlisle) will be here tomorrow. And already have a matching spare .......just in case

^^^
Looks like that one was overdue to be changed based on the wear? Hopefully that didn't delay the long pull home for you too much?!

My "arrive and drive" friends always give me grief. But think about it, how many friends have you made over the years because someone came wandering over needing a tool or something, or you pitted "outside" your run group/car make because you were parked next to him in the pits?

In any case, the day I can't do everything myself (but I hate painting, and I really no longer have the ability to do hard core machine work) is the day I go back to golf...........

Car trailers do seem to be very hard on tires. (as you know!) My experience also says you will not wear out the tread before the tires need to be replaced for AGE. Your 4 years should be conservative enough. I was using 7 years on my 24' enclosed, but it is relatively light...

The thing I'm wondering about is using a truck tire instead of a trailer tire. I think trailer tires have a much stiffer sidewall than a truck tire, even if it is rated for the same load. Maybe go up a range on a trailer tire for the next replacement?

The other thing is, trailer tires often get bounced off curbs and the potholes on the edges of pavement without the owner realizing it. Not saying that is your problem, but the tire "looks" to me like it hit something causing the belt damage.

Take a look at the sidewalls of the trailer tire when you are backing and turning. They really get deformed... I googled goodyear marathon when I went to replace tires and found a load of issues in the 5th wheel camping crowd. I thought goodyears were the best, but I think they moved production offshore. Now I don't know what brand to recommend.

Sorry to hear about your tire issues, you are not alone..
