I saw a 993 that caught my eye at http://www.holtmotorsports.com/inven...rrera-2/323370. Price is a little more than what I wanted to pay, but miles are low. Is this a trusted dealer? Should I still get a PPI if I buy from this dealer? I'm still very early in my search, but this is one of the nicer 993's I have seen.
Can't link to search results but if you do an Advanced search and query for "holt" in thread subject you'll find a number of threads, some of which are in the 993 forum.
Click Search, choose Advanced Search
> keyword: holt
> change "Search Entire Posts" to "Search Titles Only"
> show results as "Threads"
The search criteria above will limit results. You can open it up by changing back to "Search Entire Posts", and you can narrow it further by choosing to search just the 993 sub-forum, etc.
It is very tempting to not get a PPI done, but I would advise you do so. Just be prepared for a list of minor issues. These do not really matter. It is the big things you are looking for. Crash damage, leakdown results, major components condition.
I'm glad you checked Holt out. I did NOT get a PPI done when I bought from him and the car was excellent. Once you talk to Tim you will see what type of cars he buys and his wealth of information. He could stock dozens and dozens of cars but he doesn't because he is ultra picky, just the way we are as buyers. He welcomes a PPI so get one if you want but I personally passed on it and have had no issues since my April '09 purchase. Drove home to NC from Philly with a smile on my face the whole distance. Yes, he charges a bit more than 'average' but you get what you pay for. I looked at your red one in his inventory and it sure seems nice. Good luck!
Absolutely. positively get a PPI. These are 10+ year old cars at this point and purchasing the wrong car can be an extremely expensive mistake regardless of the miles. Also, only use an independent shop with lots of 993 experience and tell them ahead of time exactly what you want checked. Find the list from this forum. Using a shop with no experience is a waste of money. Many dealers today have little experience with 993's.
Get a PPI from someone unbiased that YOU choose, not someone he recommends. If you don;t live in the area you can always post here for suggestions on a good wrench/ Good Luck...
I'd go w/ a PPI too. Not that I've heard anything really bad about Holt, but as noted above, these cars are getting up there and getting one w/ even one issue that could have been found ahead of time can seriously impact not only your checking account, but also your enjoyment of the car.
Another PPI choice is Performance Automotive in Malvern (Paul or Pete). A few miles farther than the ones MrBonus recommended but highly competent specialists in Porsche.

We really are fortunate to have so many good Porsche shops in this area.
Just wanted to add that I believe Tim Holt to be a solid upstanding vendor. Didn't mean to dis him in any way. He's very knowledgeable and was helpful when I was searching, even though I didn't end up buying from him.
You've done the first one right-pick a seller with a good reputation and select one of his cars that appeals to you and that sounds like it is in good condition.
