Ours was a nightmare, it was my wife's DD and as soon as it was out of warranty the troubles started. NEVER again on the X5. Ours made a Discovery look down right cheap to own.
I've had two diesels an '00 and an '03. Both were great and had no problems (other than being carjacked with the '00- but they ran away!) Lovely cars, although the newermodels are not as good off-road.
I have an 05 4.4L sport that I have had since Oct 07. It had 38k when I got it and it's just about to roll over 63k. I love it to death. It's our Family Truckster & wife's daily driver. It replaced an 03 ///M5. My only complaint is the lack of trunk space, it's almost as bad as the ///M5. The 07 - present E70 X5 solved that prob.
I've had to spend no money out of pocket on it other then maintenance. I had a few minor issues that were fixed under warranty that the PO never noticed.
I have towed my boat with it and pulled both my 911 and 944 on various trailers. The P-cars tow like a dream and almost go unnoticed when they are back there. The boat (Baja 212 Islander) is more noticeable but still no prob for the 4.4L which has more then enough power in reserve to pass slow pokes.
We'll probably run it for another year or two and then move up to an E70.
great car....honestly, tho I had expensive issues around 75k miles that made it less than enjoyable: water pump, suspension parts, oil gasket, rotors. in the last 15k miles it cost as much to maintian as the previous 60k.
My BMW experience in general has been mixed. As a car guy I love the way they drive, good handling, nice road feel. I'm on my 2nd 325iT wagon, an 03, and have had a couple of sedans also. I will probably not buy another. They may be the ultimate driving machine but not in terms of reliability. Known issues are window regulators, plastic radiators and overflow tanks that fail, water-pumps with plastic impellers, leaks at the oil filter housing (as noted above, $3 gasket but a pain to replace), failing front suspension parts (both my iTs needed the front suspension rebuilding at 50k miles, and vanos seals (not cheap but there is an aftermarket seal kit you can do yourself for $60 and about 4-5 hours labor. Also have transmission issues and there was a class action lawsuit due to rear sub-frame failure. If you have an e46 series between 98 and 06, you need to get it inspected by the dealer before September of this year. I love driving the car but am pretty fed up with working on it and the continuous costs. Right now I've got a misfire at start up that I haven't been able to track down.
As long as she realizes it could cost $2k+ a yr to maintain it out of warranty, it's a great truck! My friend loves his. His wife drives it and I think it's an 06, 6 cylinder.

I am with Roger 100%. Love to drive BMW's, but the cost to keep them running is crazy. I had a 1998 528i sport that cost about $2500 a year to opperate.
Well she did end up buying one. This is a text I got from her a minute ago. I'll find out the details later, hope she got the warranty. Tks guys...
I love my car it has black leather interior seats and has moon roof and all options except the beeping noise when it gets too close to another object. Also navigation system but don't like the nav system it is outdated.
