Default 993 Oil Separator

I took my 1996 911 to the dealer because the Check Engine Light came on. Replacing two sensors did not solve the prolbem. They them found that the oil filler tube was cracked. They replaced it and solved the Check Engine Light problem and informed me that the oil separator was the cause of the cracked oil filler tube due to harsh vacuum. They say the oil separator needs to be replaced.

They are charging me $300 for the oil filler and labor and are asking $1,200 labor and $125 parts to replace the oil separator. I think the engine needs to be removed to do this job. Is there a way to replace the oil separator without removing the engine?

Our cars have oil separators?

I never knew. I think you're about to get taken to the cleaners on this one...

JMHO, but I think you need to get another opinion. It sounds like this dealer may be trying to improve their month by telling you that the non-existent "oil separator" needs replacement.

This is a part indigenous to the water-cooled cars and problematic to boot. The air-cooled models don't have such things and its possible they cannot tell the difference.

I cannot offer specific recommendations, but I'd find an experienced and honest shop well versed in air-cooled cars to see what you have going on.

My oil filler tube cracked and broke into little pieces, some of which went into the oil. This did NOT result in the CEL coming on.

Exactly what I was thinking....

While they are at it, ask them to change your muffler bearing and check the headlight fluid...

And maybe request a proctological exam while you're in there.

You might also have them check the Johnson Rod and muffler bearings Sounds like crap to me.

The car is a 1999 and is a 996 and shouldn't have been posted on a 993 site, sorry. Many figured that out right away. For you 993 fans, be glad that you don't have an oil separator. They seem to have a reliability problem and in order to replace the $150 part, one has to remove the engine on the Tiptronic model. Some say that it is possible to move the engine but I don't think I want to learn how to move the engine or remove the engine. I have spent my Porsche days for the last twenty years working on 928s, you know, Porsche's Corvette.

Thanks, Ern
