Default Steering Rack Attack

I just spent big ducats getting my suspension system changed over and aligned and then left the shop only to find that my front end weighed more than the North American continent. Quickly returned to the shop to find my steering rack had bitten the dust. What is a good source to buy from? I don't/can't spend $SSS to replace it with factory especially after the suspension change over (which I am not happy about at all...seperate post). Can someone suggest a source for this part? My mechanic said he has seen very few 993s with this problem and suggested it might be expected b/c of the age of the car ('97 w 113k)
TIA

Last time I checked, Zims had some great prices on rebuilt racks.
They are one of our sponsors.

I think it's a fairly common item to go at 60~80~100K+ miles. Mine was replaced by the PO at 70K.

On the east coast...Phila PA. Most shops seem to be on the west coast or, "can't get there from here!"

pcarhombre,
It's not a very difficult process to DIY. There's no motor up front so lot's of room to work on it. The biggest difficulty for me were 2 things, to meet up the sleeve of the rack with the shaft of the steering column and the boot that fits over the tie rod end. I developed a slick little tool that did it.
I have lot's of pics of the install so let me know if need any guidance.
Don't remember where I purchased the rack but I have the receipt somewhere if you need a contact. It's been installed for 3 years now and it's still doing it's job well.

I found the best price on the ZF rebuilt was with IAN'S EURO PARTS
www.ianseuroparts.com
Great guy to deal with. He is also a renn sponsor. Don't forget to order new boots ($6.95 each). Also, if your fluid hasn't already been changed over, switch to the pentosin.

All the best,
Don

+1 for powersteeringpros

packaging and presentation was very good and the unit was of course a "factory" ZF unit. Also came with boots - saving another $15

I have over 20K miles on mine with no issues.

This might be a stupid question: do I need to buy tie rods as well? My guy says my boots are torn as well.

Try Griffiths?

http://www.griffiths.com/porsche/steering/

I know their A/C evaporators are great. Perhaps their steering racks are just as good?

They're in N.J. if that helps.
